Hello all, I've been looking around for a week now so it's time to introduce myself.

My names Leigh and I'm a 35 year old man with my first SLR and not too much of a clue what to do with it.

I have just purchased a Canon 450D with the standard 18-55 lens and a Sandisk 4GB class 6 card. Now I need to know what are the next lenses I need to complete my arsenal. From looking around I see most users have 3 lenses which I assume is to cover the whole range. Got a few ideas what I want but need the advice of others who have used the equipement before.

My wish list consists of a 50mm f/1.4 or f/1.8 for portraits and either a 70-200mm f/4 or the IS version. Are there any other lens types I should consider. Oh and a tripod but not sure what to go for as I may need a pole for when I go MTBing in Wales and the Alps.

Sorry for rambling on but there are so many questions. While thinking about photography I thought it was very similar to golf in that there are so many things to think about before you even address the subject of taking a shot.

Hi Choccy

Welcome to TP.

My recommendation would be to use your current lens for at least a month and work out what it can't do for you and only then start to look for new lenses.

You might find you are doing macro work, or still lifes, or wildlife, or portraits all of which will lead your requirements in different directions

Hello :)

You'll get better answers to your questions in the relevant sections of the forum. My advice is to slow down and learn to use what you have. The kit lens it better than it looks. understand the camera and its settings before moving on to more purchases.

Hi Leigh, welcome to TP :wave:

Another in agreement here on the advice re lenses. Until you've used the camera for a while you'll not really know what you like shooting, so give it a few months and the gap in your kit will soon let itself be known.

Will save you a fair bit of money too, I'm sure.
