Hey everyone,

After a bit of advice.... Ive ordered a new flashgun for my Panasonic G1 which is due next week :D so excited!!
Im new to lighting and wondered if there were any good tutorials or books etc that anyone could recommend when using a new flashgun??
Im a guest at a wedding beginning of april and desperate to try it out and get good results so any help would be amazing? Thank you in advance

Hi Lou,

Try and get an off camera cord so you can hold it away from the camera.
Also, a diffuser would be a good idea.

Check out strobist.com, lighting 101.

Hey Stuart,

yeh that was suggested by the jessops guy however he didnt know if it is compatible with a TTL cord....lol so need to get to a panasonic shop :(
The flashgun has a built in difuser, would i need anything more than this? as you can tell, no experience with flashguns what so ever, so i feel abit in the dark lol will have a look on the site :D

In the For Sale section, find the sale posts by Flash In The Pan. He has lots of stuff on there, but also fire him a PM to ask about panasonic specific stuff, he may be able to help you.

They use the standard fourthirds (so Olympus too) TTL cords. You can get them off ebay for very little money.

Hi Louise,

What flash did you order? I've got a Metz 36 AF-4O and that works well with the Panasonic G1. The only drawback I find is that it is TTL only (no Manual settings) and doesn't swivel, only bounce. But then it only costs £70 and I've a few manual/thyristor auto flashguns if I want to "play".

My advice would be to get familiar with the flash on-camera before moving off-camera (don't run before you can walk). Neil van Neikerk has a very good book on on-camera flash that I would thoroughly recommend: http://neilvn.com/tangents/about/book/. The rest of his web site is full of very useful lighting information as well.

Just my 2p's worth.

Paul
