I've finally invested my cash and bought a Canon 5D3, my previous one being a 30D, which I've had forever. The flash I used with that was the 430EX. They brought out the 430EX II about a fortnight after I bought the 430EX...heigh ho.

Anyway, I'm committed to buying myself a new flash, but I have a couple of initial questions:

1. What would be the "best" on to go for Canon, Nissan or Metz. Obviously I've been looking for a new 580EX II, but they seem as rare as rocking horse droppings. Also If you can find they seem hideously expensive for an "obsolete" model.

2. In the meantime are there any problems with using my existing 430EX with the 5D3?

All advice/info greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Yongnou 568EX is meant to be a very good flash for the money (about £115)
Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT is a super flash and price to match (£400+)
Then all the ones that fit in between them price wise

How much do you plan on using the flash, and for what sort of shots? Do you really need the 'best' model?

future plans - radio slaves? have you a preference?

The 600 ex rt is probably the 'best'. but for the price of one, you can buy a couple of YN's and their ETTL radio kit.

In your shoes, I'd buy the Nissin Di866 and some Pixel Kings ETTL so you can use your current flash as a slave and have a really useful kit.

When I said "the best", I was talking in terms of best value and suitable for my needs...not "the best" in absolute terms or indeed the most expensive.

I'm looking for a decent set of features including HSS, to be able to use it as a master and with reasonable build quality. What I was really after was some advice with regard to third party models to integrate with my current 430EX.

Currently I'm leaning towrads Phil V's advice re the Nissin, which sounds a reasonable way forward.

As to my intended use it's mainly to get some decent portraits of family and friends.
