Hi all my first post so please forgive me if i have posted in the wrong section or havnt followed any forum rules, i'm learning.

Very new to photography ( Canon 550d ) and wanting to purchase some flash equipment, in an ideal world i'd have 3 x speedlite 580exII, i do like low key and some high key portrait photography.

My question is that i'd like a decent flash for on camera shooting to start with but i'd also like the option to take off camera and use in connection with other flashes to create different lighting effects.

Could i get away with 1 x speedlite or 1 x Jessops for on/off camera and 2 lower spec flashes for fill ?

Thanks for any advice

Short answer is yes.

Always get at least one good quality gun that you can use for all sorts things, then supplement with others for multiple use.

If you have access to mains power, a studio head is a much better option. Fast recycling and a modelling light beats hot-shoe guns any day. They're not expensive, eg Lencarta Smartflash £110.

Thanks for that, i had a chance to play with a cheap yangoing 460 mkII one or whatever its called last night so think i'll start shopping for 2 of those plus a canon speedlite for on camera aswell as the triggers beauty dishes stands etc ........... Ebay and google here i come :)

Depending on your location, the Focus on Imaging exhibition is on at the NEC from 4th to 7th March and many manufactures sell at a discount at the show. Lencarta will be there and I also have Lencarta lights E300's which are superb.

It would be a good idea to complete your TP profile so that others know where you are located and that may get you more contacts locally.

Good luck

UPDATE .. Got myself a canon speedlite 430 now, using this on my carera am i right in thinking that any other flashes i buy would be set into slave mode so when my speedlite flashes the others will too ?

Also if i wanted to use my speedlite OFF camera i guess i'd need a camera trigger, if i buy a camon one would the e-ttl info be transfered or is it best to use in manual mode?

Cheers

Not quite. You need a master unit to trigger remote slaves, and 430EX is not a master.

Ways forward largely depend on what you want to spend. Manual remote exposure control is cheap, E-TTL rather less so.

ok so questions follow :)

1. if i use my 430 on shoe can it trigger 2 x YONGNUOs ?

2. if i use off shoe can i get a remote trigger for it ? and also trigger the YONGNUOs

Still getting to grips with all this lol

No. See above.

Yes. Anything from about £20 (basic manual) to £400 (Full Monty E-TTL) per set.
