Hi all. I'm about to become a 70D owner and I am opting for the body only and then selecting a better lens than the supplied kit one.

I'm after a walkabout type lens so I can learn and get used to the camera first. Then I will dabble with others further down the line.

I have had my eye on the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f2.8 IS USM lens at around £540 from HDEW.

or cheaper - a Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 EX DC OS HSM

Would you guys say these were a good match up with the 70D for a beginner? Useage will be for holidays and general shots around the countryside / city.

I am researching a lot and truth be told... becoming a bit overwhelmed. Your advice/input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks very much

Either of these lenses would ok, it depends on what you want to shoot. if you are just starting out then the kit lens isn't bad for a starting point, then use your money on an external flash instead

Hi. Ok so perhaps I should just get the 70D 18-55 STM kit then and a speedline 430 flash. I was thinking that getting a upgraded lens from the off as a total beginner was perhaps overkill...

Consider the 18-135mm kit lens, that's a very versatile lens for the little extra cost.

OP, either the 18-55 STM or the 18-135 STM, if you want the extra reach, will be a great start with your 70D. Both the STM lenses are an improvement over the older versions and will suit you well for general shooting. If you are going to be doing lots of indoor or low light shooting then the f2.8 lenses you mentioned would be better for you but the addition of a flash gun will open up a lot of different opportunities instead. Have a look at the 70D owners thread http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/threads/canon-eos-70d-owners-thread.502333/ for loads of good info and welcome to the 70D club.

Thank you guys. Have gone for the 18-135 STM kit lens. Will take a good look around the forums. :)
