Hi

I was using an old Canon powershot from 2008 as a carry around camera but I think tech has improved such that I can get something easily better that won't cost much.

What I need is a small camera that will produce noticeably better IQ than any smart phone. Some manual control would be great. I can't expect perhaps full manual control for the price.

It can be secondhand but I would like new.

Budget: less than 200 euro. I know it's a tall order and some of you will say it will be rubbish but like I said, it just needs to be better than my phone. The pics are mostly only going on instagram or facebook if I am out and about, don't have the DSLR and want to capture something interesting on the street.

Large zoom is not important.

Hmmm, I would suggest seeing about the Panasonic LX series; They're pretty good performers from what I understand, good bright lens and decent images quality. There are larger sensors cameras about (The models escape me, but they ere are some from Panasonic and Sony) which represent phenomenal quality in companions to traditoinia compact cameras, but I'm pretty sure they're a bit more than 200.. I'lll have a look later and let you know the ones Im thinking of.

Do they do LX cameras any more? Used is an option though.

I had the LX2 and moved to a 5 and thought it was a backward step image quality wise. It was cleaner at higher ISO's but I used to get sharp shots from my 2 and the 5 only seemed to give a mushy mess. I now have an LF1 which I've read has or had the same chip as the LX7. I don't know if they still make either but I'd be put off by the LXx cameras as you're stuck with back screen shooting and one of the things that made me switch to the LF1 is that it has a useable EVF. It's nowhere near as well made as the LXx series though and image quality is no better, ie. it produces a mushy mess if you go looking closely.

Hmm i think so - quick google sos the LX100 current, albeit high price.

This is a little gem I had a couple years ago now https://www.dpreview.com/reviews/fujifilm-xf1

I personally rate this very very much - an excellent little thing with great quality and cracking style. May be not right for you but I recommend it. Cheap too now, i think.

The problem with the xf1 as discussed on another thread is that they have an inherent fault with the lens ribbon that snaps. It's likely going to happen to all of them some sooner than others.

You could get a Sony RX100 second hand for around that price, great little camera.

Ah I'd never noticed that! That's a shame!

It is a shame because they're great cameras. Also Fujifilm reaction to it has been disgraceful.

Yes just read the thread... their reaction is ubelibaly really, considering the issue!

Sony HX60 perhaps? Not sure if there's an updated version.

But I'd buy something better used if it where me.
