I quite fancy the flash for a starter, but not sure about the camera, not really bothered about movie capability, got a DVHD movie camera already (also takes 8mp stills) and that was only £100. No doubt the 500D will soon be featuring on some wish lists.

I think they have got it all a little wrong here.

VERY similar to a 50D however in an entry level body and entry level market. Why didn't they put these specs into a 50D with the current 6FPS - People would pay that price.

I feel Canon are trying to attract amatuers with money by using the 'HD Movie' as the key selling point, along with the MP - Newbis don't know much else.

Movie mode may well attract people, compact owner do use it. Certainly traditional print media are having to look at video footage as things move to an online basis.

Personally I'd rather have a dslr that can shoot video than a video camera that can shoot stills!

I think the official thread for this is;

Cant see the need for movie mode on a DSLR myself, seems like a gimmick, just like the video camera on my phone which I dont use! I agree its a gadget for the 'newbies' but newbies dont spend £800 on a camera, they'll buy a P&S which is why I think Canon have got this wrong...
