Hi all, I'm Lee. Well I finally succumbed for my dughters 2nd Birthday and new arrival due in 1 month to upgrade from my Canon S3IS to my first D-SLR. After 2 days I am really impressed (although I do miss my superzoom a little).

Any recommendations on next upgrade welcome, like flash unit or portrait lens greatly appreciated.

Go easy on me.

Any places for tips too?

Hi Lee,

Not sure what type of photography you would like to concentrate on but my first buy (apart from the 450D + 18-55mm) was the 50mm 1.8. I found this really helped me to start thinking about depth of field and composition etc. Should also help you get some nice shots of your daughters Birthday.

Enjoy!

Dean

Cheers Dean, I'll keep a look out for some deals on it - any Flash ecommendations - what about the 430EX?

I haven't owned a 430EX but I can't see any problems with any of the Canon flashes. It does depend on how much you think you will use it, might be best waiting a month or so and then looking back over your photos to see what sort you have taken. For example you may decide you like macro shots and decide to go for a macro lens or a telephoto one, so then a flash wouldn't really be that useful...

Whatever happens it will become an expensive hobby no doubt:D

Hi and welcome. My first lens purchase to go with my 450d was the EFS 55-250 IS, as it gave me, overall with the kit lens, a longer focal length range than I had with my superzoom (which I tended to often use at the longer end).

good first 3 purchases are 50mm f1.8 430exII and 55-250 IS (or other tele - theres a lot of variation here). The order depends on what you want to do. 50mm f1.8 I loved and is dammed cheap speedlight is awesome but maybe wait a bit until you understand the camera as you gotta get it off shoe for proper fun (google strobist) and a tele lets you shoot stuff further away - which is awesome

I just recently bought my first flash - the 430EX2... Very good flash and I have no regrets at all... :)

as said - it really depends on what you are shooting and what your budget.. if you are looking at low light, then possible the 17-55 2.8. A good (in my opinion) general walkabout everday lens is the 17-85 IS.

Welcome to the 450D owners club :)
We are a friendly bunch here and you'll get plenty of help and advice along the way.
