Best advice is go to your camera shop, try out as many camera's as possible and choice one that you feel comfortable holding and operating.

Canon, Nikon, Sony, Pentax, Panasonic, Olympus all make good entry level camera's and performance is pretty much of a muchness. If you can avoid buying the kits (ie camera and lens(es), buy camera body and lens separately) as they ain't great, but down to your budget.

as peter said but i would advise to stay away from any brand except nikon and canon, you will understand when you want to upgrade body and lenses. this is simply because nikon and canon have the largest range of lenses and bodys which are professional and non professional so upgrading can be really easy and nobody can argue that a mainstream manufacturer is better than nikon or canon for dslr cameras with such a wide range of cameras and lenses + if there are any problems with anything if you buy nikon or canon you can be assured you are not the first person to experience a problem :)

Also worth having a look at some of the reputable second hand sellers to get more bang for your buck - many will come with a guarantee. This will leave you more money buy quality lenses with.

I would have to disagree with this, unless you are going Pro, every Lens ever made for the Pentax camera's will work on the pentax DSLR's, I beleive they are the only company that can do this, I know the older lenses dont autofocus, but lots of good glass available cheaply.

Personally I would second the idea of going to your local camera shop and trying a few different ones out to see what feels best for you.

I didn't say that, yes nikon and canon are the established brands and when it comes to lenses brand or 3rd party, yes they get more than the lion's share, but don't let that stop you from going with one of the other brands if the camera suits you. Sony can use Minolta lenses and the like of sigma, tamron and tokina are producing lenses for the other brands. When I started, it was canon or nikon only, so much more choice now.

As mentioned, you don't have to buy new, there are some fantastic older models out there, you get for for your $$$

ok, sorry, i didn't make that clear, i meant i agreed with you peter about going into a shop and having a look round and having a go with different cameras. sorry if you got confused.

I'm just going on what other recent threads which have mentioned people using Sony dslrs and getting a d3100 and saying it was so much better than the Sony system.

i was also trying to say that if Lee bought a nikon or a canon and maybe wanted to upgrade to a pro lens or pro body it would be a lot easier to do so. and there is more benefits with buying mainstream dslrs than buying less common cameras, it is also easier to buy accessories for mainstream cameras and it is easier to buy second hand parts simply because there are more things available.

i have never used a 3rd party lens manufacturer such as Tamron or Sigma so i can't comment on them, i have only used nikkor lenses and canon lenses

sorry if anyone got confused about what i said.
