Over the past few years I've been the main photographer at a number of weddings and events but mostly doing favours for friends and family. I've now taken the step to turn this into a business with working full time as a photographer as my end game.

I'm at the point where I need to invest in a better body as my 40D is showing it's limitations, especially in low light.

I'm looking at either the Canon 5D Mk3 or the 6D. I understand the main differences and I convince myself on a hourly basis to go for one, then the other. So I'm looking for advice from you guys.

I'll be mostly working with children, families and at weddings. I can afford the 5D Mk3 but I'm not sure I need it right now?

Advice would be great :)

If it's low light where you're looking to improve, then the 6D will give you that. Use the money saved to buy another lens (fast prime?) or even two ;) Come to that, a used 5DMk2 would save even more.

Do you need to invest in new lenses when you move to full frame? If so, have you considered looking at other brands, Nikon in particular?

If you want to stay with Canon and are typically a focus/recompose type shooter, the 6d centre focus point is more sensitive than the 5d.

If on the other hand you tend to use a wider variety of focus points, you may find the 6d limiting. I'm sure you aware of the rest of differences, but for your purposes I'd say the focus system is the main point to consider.

Good luck... You can't really go wrong to be honest!

Couple of second hand 5d mkii' would get my money for a cheap wedding setup. People will moan about the limited AF but you shouldn't notice moving from the similar setup of the 40D and for years it was the camera of choice among pro's.
