Grandson is only days away....... When is the best time for the required newborn photo shoot..... and where is the best place to get the wicker baskets, silly hats etc....

Never had to encounter this this type of shoot before so maybe new paths LOL :D

They say the optimum time is between 7 and 10 days because at this stage they mainly sleep and they are very mouldable for compositions.

I wouldn't stickcto that time line rigerously though.

As for props, there are plenty of online shops who specialise in baskets, blankets and props however check out your local homeware stores to. You should be able to rustle something up.

If you're going to use baskets make sure that you have plenty of padding to go inside and to cover any hard edges that you'll be placing the baby against - run your hand over the inside too to make sure that there are no little bits of wicker poking out.

TK Maxx, The Range, What! and other places like that do a good selection of baskets at bargain prices.
You don't have to go nuts with props though - just a couple of attractive blankets to use as backdrops / wrap baby in still work well. At this time of year there are loads of chunky knit scarves around too which are the perfect size for wrapping a baby / using as the top layer of fabric to line a basket.

Hi archangel,
I did a newborn at 6 days old and he was brilliant, he did not move until we took his clothes off to do nappy and naked tummy ones then he wriggled, but he did this cute stretch pose that his parents loved so took those too.
I used the corner of sofa with cushions to prop him up and did a variety of poses, I used his own blanket to cover the sofa up.
One of the cutest poses is wrap some of the blanket of the bottom half of baby (this works up to about 3 month old, either clothed or bare tophalf ) and place their hands on top as if he/she is snuggled up, but crop the photo from just under the hands to above head.
For the nappy/naked poses I laid him done on flat surface on a blanket and moved his knees up towards his waist so he was not flat, if he does move get mum or dad to put their hand under blanket to support baby.

I have booked a studio but I would love to try natural light also...anyone try natural light for a new born

Sent from my GT-I9300 using Talk Photography Forums mobile app

I was in the friends flat had some natural light as was summer, but had to pull curtains across due to sun on baby.
If I used the flash it was the built in flash on my Sony a330.

We had a baby 3 months ago and im taking a shot of him each day. I havnt done anything like portrait shots or anything before so a lot of them are just record shots but it might give you an idea of his size etc. http://www.flickr.com/photos/philblair/sets/72157635497179574/
Hope it all goes well for you.

WOW!
The ones taken on the fur blanket and the black blanket look like studio ones phil_b
Love the one wrapped in fur with the wool hat, so adorable :)

You want him under 14 days, for newborn. Start with simple set up i.e. one blanket, natural lght then add lighting & props as required. Take your time though a shoot like that can easily last up to 3-4 hours. generally keep it simple and try not to overdoo with props etc. Also, a nice big window will generally be enough lighting wise e.g this was done using only window light.

This shoot is probably done and dusted by now... But as a client of mine put it when he did some newborn shoots- use finest Devon accent..... ' dun 'em p*** and s**t '

Wipes... Wipes..... Wipes......

Shoot has been done.....It was a complete disaster. On the first day he wiggled, cried and was just unsettled.... so we rescheduled for a few days later......this time my daughter's partner was with us.... . He was the biggest baby about.....consistently butting in, not wanting this pose or that pose, saying the baby looks uncomfortable and my favourite quote of the day "child birth was easier!" So I abandoned all hope as he was getting all stressed (the father of my grandson not me)....I did manage to grab a few candid shots but haven't really got them transferred to the computer yet.... maybe do that today saying it us raining and I have nothing better to do

Aw, that is a pity. How about subtly sending him out to Tesco's to get some food or something that was accidentally left off the shopping list next time?
I have found with our new baby, there is a sweet spot shortly after being fed that leaves the baby somewhat more maleable than it might otherwise be.
Perhaps concentrate on getting candid's of the most uncomfortable poses possible? I know our baby has put itself into some extreme positions whilst trying to get to sleep.

Or, maybe, get someone to hold the baby in a white cloth. I know I don't get to argue with someone having 'cuddles' with our baby. So if you can get someone to cuddle the baby with a background you could easily edit out, you might be able to get some that way.

I didn't manage to get any good shots of the baby myself in the first few days, so all we really have are the candid's that my father in law took.
