New baby photos.....help

Hi all,
I need to take some pics of new baby. Have Nikon d3100 but nothing else!
How is best to photo newborn? I am guessing flash is too harsh so would i just have to use natural light... Any help and suggestions?

You'll definitely need a lens as well!
