My wife and I are expecting a baby any day now. I was wondering if anyone has any tips or ideas of settings and poses for the first photos. In terms of kit I have a Canon 7D, 24-105L, 50mm 1.8, 85mm 1.8, 580 EX II.

Congratulations Rob, exciting times & sleepless nights ahead!

I would opt for either the 50mm or 85mm, if you only have natural light at your disposal set up next to a patio window, lay a duvet down over a couple of pillows, white sheet covering it pegged to a chair for the background. Newborns are best photographed between 6-10 days as you can pose them easier. If you want plenty of sleepy shots keep the temperature in the room warm.

One of my best baby posing items is a bean bag, ideal for getting them in the right poses comfortably & safely.

Happy shooting, you will get plenty of practise I am sure.

Congratulations Rob, If you have a look on here under Sarah Wilkes she does some cool stuff, I think she is on Flickr too

The first few days are the best to get some amazing images. To be honest if you really treasure images I would say consider getting a pro to shoot the images (you can learn too as you watch)!

Tracy Willis at Maternity2Mishchief is fantastic at this is fantastic at this type of photography and you really can get som,e amazing images.
I know you will want to take these yourself but without the kit/props etc it just won't look the same.

Then you can shoot till your heart's content :)

As noted above a nice large (preferably north facing) window is a great start and the 85mm lens should get you some nice images.

Keep the baby VERY warm and he/she will be content. When colder they wriggle around a lot more.

Sleeping is the best time to take shots as they are still and you can move them into positions.

Get down to their level too :)
