As mentioned elsewhere I am getting a new Android phone.......................now a few moths back I sorted out the OH's new phone so what with backing up the phone as appropriate all should be well....famous last words  Note ~ the apps and contacts are OK to backup for recovery on the new phone, all being well :)

But I cannot see how to save/export the Chrome bookmarks

So, fuddled brain since I sorted out the OH phone I would welcome some reprise and actions I should take as an aide memoire to keep me on track :D

TIA for the feedback and insights (y)

They can be synced within Chrome to the Google account it signs in to (it probably does it by default, so something you would have actively opted out of doing... Look in sync settings)

They will all be there as soon as you log in to chrome only with Android phone being google based you probably won't even have to do that.
Once you log in to your google account it will automagically download everything, it would be best to be on decent fast wifi if possble.

Hope this helps :)

Thanks all for the insights & pointers.

So, in readiness:-

  • I have backed the phone, which includes the Apps...............does that also for e.g. my email client...does it retain the email accounts settings and the current displayed emails in the client?

  • In regard to Chrome
I no longer use Chrome on the PC so the phone is the only device with active use of Chrome (NB I have just checked my PC Chrome and that is not based on the same account as the phone)

Note ~ even if they were the same account, I have different websites bookmark sets on the PC compared to the phone. Primarily based on the fact that the phone screen is way to small compared the PC display! Yes, many in bookmarks common but would not want them sync'ed.

Therefore as the phone is not sharing an account with any other device, so what would happen if I sync the phone what & where is it sync'ing to???

Based on what you say @4wd as Chrome is an App that is default on Android.....by Backing Up the phone have I in effect saved the Bookmarks, Website Passwords (e.g. the one for here at TP?)

  • Yes, I will do all the needed setting up with WiFi connected ;)

  • Oh, I am unsure but what about all my text messages threads/history???

There is phone clone software, some phones come with it installed from new, that should copy over texts etc, should you want to keep them

What happens is it syncs to your Google account and when you sign in on a new device it syncs to the phone.

Update

The new Moto G82 arrived and it turned out to be a Hybrid Dual i.e. if 2 SIMs fitted no mSD space............I have let Motorola Support know the advice was incorrect.

I have decided to keep it on the basis that I only put the mSD card in my old phone because it seriously challenged for space. Everyday I had to be careful of the space in the phone to 'run'.

The new phone has approx 113GB of free space after the OS and Apps etc installed and running. On the old phone the combined usage 'phone' & mSD card came to about 55GB. So I could not see the new phone filling up anytime soon. NB I copied the mSD contents to my PC and will sort them and copy what I need to across to the new phone.

NB I have looked and I have 107GB free space :)

As for the Chrome sync ~ well it worked well for the bookmarks but not 'recalling' the open tabs in use

I am sorting through the apps and in many where there are logins I have to do a forgotten password and get back as needed. Including on Chrome for here at TP ;)

PS I have yet to transfer my SIM cards,,,,,everything done on WiFi as needed. So will have to see about the text messages !

Thank you for the update. I too moved from a moto G5 to a moto G 5G which has a hybrid sim which is a pain, but as it is the 64gb variant, space has not yet been an issues like it was with the Moto G5.

Not sure I mentioned it but I lastly used SMS Backup & Restore to ...... Backup the SMS texts history and my call history log to Google Cloud and on the new phone Restore these to the new phone :)

PS I got a 'text used notice' from my Giff Gaff number this morning and thought I have not sent s text  .... It seems Google had, unbidden(?), added that number to the primary number on/at Google. I disabled that as IMO is too intrusive!!!
