Yes
I have just bought a second hand eos 400d (body only) and sold my 350d and kit lens, this leavs me with two lenses....

Canon EF 24-85 f3.5-4.5
Canon EF 75-300 f4-5.6 II

Now the 24-85mm (38mm) is not wide enough for me and the 75-300mm is a b****r to hold steady at 300mm (480mm)

Question 1
So do I buy a 10-20mm and live with the zoom problem

Question 2
Do I buy a kit lens 18-55mm with the IS feature and then buy the 55-250 Is later on.

Question 3
Is my 24-85 better than the 18-55mm IS?

Oh god im confused now and i dont have L series type money to spend either.

thanks.

A 10-20 seems like it will complete your kit if you can deal with the zoom issue.

I'm not only saying that because I have one for sale in the classified section either :p

Your option 2 seems like a good one to me. You could always add in the venerable 50mm f1.8 for low-light use too.

Well i'd go for option 2 and not only because my new camera came with one that isn't required and will be up for sale very soon

That's probably the best option anyway and should give you a suitable focal range

I am in the process of acquiring a Canon 100mm Macro lens, but love taking shots of insects and the Cambridgeshire landscape is less than exciting

You should be able to complete option 2 now. Option 1 will cost around £300 secondhand and option 2 can be achieved for around £280 new for both lenses.

That would be my choice.

Where would i look to get both new for £280?

I currently have your option 2 + the nifty fifty - doing me great so far!

Forgive the touting, but mine is new, just unboxed as it came with the body

Daresay you will find a few people selling them like that, in fact camera shops do when they split a kit up
So if buying privately worries you, have a look at shops websites and see if you can see one that says something like "new, unboxed" or "comes in plain/white box"

Is the Canon 17-85mm IS a better bet than the 18-55mm IS?

Probably if you want that range, but also more expensive too

That often comes as a kit lens and should be available unboxed as well

Bear in mind you are going for a 55-250mm and will being duplicate the lower end

The Sigma 17-70 is a cracking lens!

Went for the Canon 17-85mm IS bought second-hand from a member here, thanks to all who replied and gave advice,

Daryl.
