Grand bunch of Lads and fantastically welcoming (from Gunnery-Sergeant downwards - less so from Lieutenant on upwards), but bloody scarey to work with out here...
If you watch Full Metal Jacket, The Boys From Company C and Animal House, that pretty much sums it all up...
Lots of 'Oo-Yah' and 'Semper-Fi' -ing all round...and the last-minute mohawk haircuts before the Big Op were hysterical - photos going up on my Flickr page as and when the connection speed allows...
Dreadful tactical awareness and a scary disregard for the IED threat means they will inevitably suffer proportionally higher casualties than we do, I'm afraid to say...'Cavalier' doesn't even begin to cover the attitude of most US Marines here...
I hope I'm proved wrong, but...
On the plus side - they are tremendously photogenic...It was a Combat photographer's dream come true...
But - and it's a Big BUT...no hot water - they do not do 'Brews' as we do - each MRE (Meal, Ready-to-Eat) has a chemical heater included which will heat one meal OR the beverage sachet, but not both...hot food is a must now that it's Winter, so I went almost 2 weeks with no tea...bloody Colonial Savages...
