So much of such a beautiful world that you'll never see.

I've been on dozens of flights but have (in the last year) developed an irrational fear of flying!! Really weird!!

IMHO I dont think people have a fear of flying but a fear of crashing, which is funny really as you are more likely to be run over by a car than crash in a plane.

Flew once (in 1976), decided it was utterly ghastly, and haven't bothered again.
It's far more civilised to travel slowly, meet the people, enjoy the sights and the journey, and get a sense of scale.
I tend to view people flying to places they couldn't point to on a map to get plastered on cheap hooch and catch a dose of an exotic STD as screaming eejits.......

So where do you travel slowly to?

Flying is nothing to be scared of.....it's the crashing bit you need to worry about!! :exit:

I love flying, as it usually means I'm going to, or have just been to, somewhere hot and sunny!!

It amazes me when I hear people say they don't want to go abroad and will die having not experienced anything/place outside the UK.....they're missing out on sooooo much!!

I just never got into traveling, my kids have both been all over the world, son has just left China after being there for four years, now in Vietnam, my daughter is living in Australia, when I was young most of the world was closed and traveling was very expensive, I'm happy where I am and don't particularly like human beings, the world is too full of em.

What's to fear? Technically you're more likely to die driving!

I really don't like the feeling of ascending and descending, makes my gut do loops.

Once at cruising altitude I'm okay if I keep occupied.

Bit like me when I go to Amsterdam then...............:)

As Mr T often like to say "You ain't gettin' me on no plane, foo'!".

I'm 45 and I have never seen a plane close up, never mind get in one. I'm of the type who thinks that if God wanted us to fly, he would have given us wings.

Even though I'm a total plane geek I've just spent 2 years doing 200 flights a year with work, I don't want to see the inside of another plane for a very long time unless it's taking me somewhere sunny for a chillout sesh!

I'm shocked seeing the number of people who haven't travelled by air actually! Have you travelled much abroad or stayed in the UK all your lives?

On her first flight,my friend asked me to "open the window, its getting stuffy"

I kid you not. I find flying boring, take off and landing are about the most exciting things to happen on a plane.

I guess you can't miss what you've never had, but I'm sorry that there is so much beauty and culture you'll never get to experience.

I've not flown in around 25yrs, not fussed really, not bothered about going abroad neither. Only place I'd really like to go is Australia for Bathurst, Aussi V8's.

Now I am starting to understand some of the strange, xenophobic opinions that creep into some of the threads

From what i've read, that's not unusual. I've heard even pilots and trolly-dollies can suffer from this.

When you die in a plane crash, you're deader than a very dead thing.

What do you do for a living? Traffic reporter for local radio?

Most people would not comprehend the level of engineering, design, testing and inpection that go's into the building of airliners. the cost of some of the components we make is staggering, this is why they are so safe.
I fly on occasion but loathe every second of it, normally the panic sets in as soon as the door is sealed until I get back on terra firma. It's just the feeling of no control that gets me.

Yeah, me too. Been round the world loads of times, but recently just don't like flying for some reason.

Saying that, I don't think I'm going to convince SWMBO that Cornwall is the best place for our honeymoon next year! :D

love flying and if its a bumpy flight the better for me....

just think every landingis a controllede crash.............

once had a woman ask me on a particularly turbulent flight and a bit of a hairy landing..."how often do these panes crash?" ..

"Just the once. they are kind of f***ed when they make an uncontrolled landing"

Pretty sure if you die anywhere you're deader than a very dead thing ;)

Actually plane crashes can be quite well survived if you're in the right part of the plane and the pilot manages to guide it down for a slightly controlled landing.

There were survivors of the deadliest single-aircraft accident in history. And in no way was that controlled!

Which incident are you referring to just out of interest?

The JAL one.

Flown extensively in the past and never worried about crashing, mainly worried about catching the cough/cold/(insert other) of the person sitting behind me who shouldn't be travelling, or of ever getting my legs to straighten out and work again.

i have flown multiple times to spain cyprus bulgaria turkey and las vegas
my 3 kids have been to the above places with me as well except vegas and this october we took my grandson to turkey at 5 months old
he got his passport at 6 weeks old

I didn't go on a commercial* aircraft until I was 29 - which is funny considering I owned an aviation sales company prior to that....

*had been on private/military aircraft
