Good morning to all

Background: in an old 5 story house.

I need some help and advice here re the purchase of the right equipment for my computer network needs. Now I have a BT Infinity connection on the ground floor from which runs a cable to the second floor. Those on the ground, first and second floors can also connect with wi-fi with no problems. I also have a cable running to the top (fourth) floor and here I have a Netgear 5 port switch running a couple of cables.

The question I have here relates to this top floor where wi-fi does not reach and I want to connect my iPad / iPhone / other wireless devices.

Can I replace the Netgear 5 port switch with something similar that also broadcasts a wi-fi signal? If so, what would this be called / any recommendations as to a good brand / model?

I hope this makes sense and you can be of some help.

Sincerely,

Ged

I have a D-link Dir-615 N router bought for £7 off ebay as a wireless extender connected by cable to the main router. just go into the settings and turn off DHCP and give it a static IP for easy logging in to change config in future.

connected devices will get their IP from your main router.

Thank you both Neil and Robert; I will see what I can come up with an no doubt be back with a few more questions.

There are wireless extenders that you can use on the mains power sockets in the house. A lot less faff to setup. Only caveat is they must be on the same board as each other I believe.

if you go down the old/spare router, erm route, just make sure it has the capability to do DHCP passthrough and the ability to set manual DNS as not all will.

All of that is beyond my capacity I'm sorry to say :(

This sounds like it could be helpful. Can you recommend one, point to an online line please?
