Ok so my beloved Acer Scanwit (Benq) 2720s will not work with Windows 7, :cuckoo: Thanks Mr I van afford to buy new equipment Bates.

So, I, on limited income (disabled son) need a new scanner.

I have a Canon 8000F but have lost the origional disk that came with it and the neg carrier.

1. Can anyone advise where I may be able to get a copy of the origional CD that came with the scanner please and carriers (NOT downloaded from Canon).

2. If not, I am after a half decent scanner for 35mmnegs and slides, what do people here use, and no need posting about any that cost £000s.

I think you're probably going to have problems getting hold of the carriers for the 8000F - if they're anything like the 8800F's they're crap anyway. Normal recommendation are the betterscanning 120 carriers, but the 8000F's not mentioned on their website either.

as far as sourcing another cheap 35mm scanner, I'll leave it to my esteemed colleagues, as anything I'd recommend would probably be too expensive :shrug:

You see it is horses for courses.

I simply want to scan the occasionsl 35mm neg/slide, in it's day the 8000f was a superb scanner, but now ...

I would not really want to go over £150.

Ideas, and whilst I accept that something like this is not every ones idea of what they want, not everything can be summed up as C&^% especially if not tried.

I never said the 8000F was crap - I was passing comment on the pathetic excuse for a negative holder that they ship out with the 8800F, and saying that if the holders for the 8000F WERE the same, then they weren't up to much!

I didn't say "you" were saying it was crap, just added that to the end of the bit about the maplin link.

Ok so now I am most annoyed, you have thrown another scanner in.

I was looking at the Canon 8080F as it does medium format and I have some of them, but you have said the V500, well thanks a lot.

Opinions of this woul be appreciated please.

You could of course go the other route of disinstalling 7 and installing either XP (if you can get a disc ) or Linux etc - which would then support your scanner

The VueScan help page for your Acer/BenQ includes a reference to installing the VueScan driver, which might help on Windows 7, or you could get a USB->SCSI adaptor, although the one linked from that page is discontinued and having done a quick google, there don't appear to be many alternatives.

You can download VueScan free for evaluation; it's useless for proper scanning in that form as all scans are watermarked with VueScan branding but it'll allow you to see if their driver would do the trick for your scanner.
 
The Epson 2480photo is not bad, got mine for £8 off IIRC gumtree.
 
it allows you to run a seperate opperating system on the virtual machine so you could have windows xp on it and use it to scan - another possibility would be to partion the harddrive and go for a dual boot system (where you select whether you want xp or 7 at boot up)

or buy an xp system off of ebay and run it seperately for use with the scanner (i'm slightly perplexed as to how you afforded a new rig running W7 if your income is so limited you cant afford a scanner)

you can also get adapters to allow you to shoot an image of a slide with your dslr

Yep. It allows you to run a different (guest) operating system on top of whatever [host] OS you use day to day. The main benefits are that you don't have to repartition your hard disk, you can run as many guest OSes as you like and it's easy to wipe them and maintain completely different or temporary configurations.

I use it to run XP on my Apple MacBook Pro for the occasions I need access to Windows software.

Thinking about it, though, if the problem is a hardware driver, you'd have to run Windows 7 in the Virtual Machine with XP as the host OS, as the VM relies on the host to provide access to hardware. Perhaps not ideal.

Dual boot or a cheap second hand computer just for scanning is probably a better way to go in those circumstances.
 
Look for the Epson 4180/4490? Can't remember if the 3480 also supports medium format.

What an amazing comment here, what has it got to do with you, and I find the comment offensive.

As I have stated before in threads I am a single father of THREE disabled sons, my income is Carers allowance and my sons DLA, we buy what they need and is their hobby, it is photography like mine, we have to watch the money, the computers are their lives, now we need to scan to expand their hobby.

I don't smoke, drink or gamble or take holidays.

Is that satisfactory to you, I did not know we had to justify our requirements.

Has it also occurred to you that just perhaps companies help disabled youngsters with equipment or lower costs.

No it will not work as the scsi card drivers load first and the computer will not boot, BUT, YES what a fool, me not you, I have just installed a new 2Tb hard drive, so have a spare 80Gb, XP, dual boot, THANK YOU.

It has nothing to do with BOTH of us being nice, comments like this are un called for.

Ok then I make an complaint that I feel insulted.
 
If you have a problem - use the RTM button, that's what it's there for - not in-thread.

So far in this thread you have...

1) said you want a cheap solution, then decided that you've a budget of £150 which is certainly a mid-priced option to us film cheapskates

2) mis-interpreted my assistance, seemingly stating that i'd dismissed something as "crap" when I'd actually simply said that the updated version's kit was of this nature.

3) dismissed Pete's help / sugestion in reply #9 with a raspberry

4) dismissed Brians suggestion because it's discontinued in #12 (even though they a still available s/h, will do the job, and are a cheap solution.

5) been asked to calm down and behave by a member, and then by a moderator

frankly, I agree that it's nobody business but your own where you got the money for your nice new computer, and I couldn't really give a damn if you've got a fiver or £5000 to spend on your scanning needs. I came in here to help out, only to find my help and the help of others to be dismissed in a rather brusque fashion by you. This isn't the way I expect to be treated by fellow members of the community, and I suggest that you reconsider your behaviour and the way you come over to people before posting further.

Suffice to say that I didnt mean any offence - but its an honest question if you can afford a new W7 machine why didnt you get a scanner with it , they are cheap as chips bought in a bundle. Come to that why can't one of the companies that offers deals to the disabled supply a scanner too ?

Assuming you dont want to go that route, as I and other members have said theres a cornucopia of cheap second hand gear on the 'bay running XP or vista (for example I've recently bought an Athon 64 rig running XP , with a 22" widescreen monitor for £150) so it would be both affordable and sensible to set up a second machine purely for scanning. - there are also (as I'm sure you are aware) companies that supply second hand gear from office upgrades to disabled/disadvantaged youngsters , so you could pick up an XP machine that way

one last point with going the dual boot route - unless you have a XP disc left over from your old machine you may struggle as I don't think MS offer it as a download anymore (though i would guess that you can get discs and licences on the bay) , so another option might be linux assuming you can get a linux driver for the benq

(and for the record my sister is disabled and I acted as her carer for many years - no one person has a monopoly on bad luck or hardship, but some are less vocal about it than others)

I am sorry to say that I am going to ignore the mediator/moderator as I had no idea that is what they were, it is nice to speak directly to you, what I have learnt is that in future I will PM someone rather than reply on the forum, never too old to learn.

I am sorry I jumped the gun, and do accept that you meant no offence, and this apology to you has nothing to do with anything that others have said, please accept my apology.

As for linux, as I said before in a post "tongue in cheek" :razz: the problem with that is nothing else I have would work.

The computer is two years old, was XP, but as its an Acer they offered a free 7 upgrade to all owners.

You are 100% correct, fortunately I bought an XP cd years ago, so I will do as you suggest, dual boot as this appears to be the best way.

I was going to send some through, but they got all squished when i stuffed them in the usb port - do you think its because they arent compatible with W7 :lol:

You've reminded me of a contract I was on up in Edinburgh. One of the permie staff asked if I'd give him some feedback for a 6-monthly review and I agreed, joking that he should bribe me with standard currency for IT people, Jaffa cakes. Next day I got to the office and there were two boxes of them on my desk :D
