Hello peeps,

I've decided to try and develop my own film. Bought a bit of gear and going to buy a starter kit from Nik and Trick. BUT, once i've developed it, i have no way of scanning it.
I have a printer/scanner combo for home use, but it's pants and won't scan negatives. I was looking at scanners on amazon but with Christmas coming i just can't afford anything too expensive.
Do you friendly folk have any advice on something cheapish and cheerful that does the job, or do i have to shell out for the best results?

Max format size and budget are your main parameters. No point in recommending a v300 if you need to scan 120 for example.
 
Interested to hear the answers as I too am in Dave's predicament but will be doing 35mm and 120 film negs
 
I'm only shooting 35mm. I don't own a medium format camera anymore.
 
There are quite a few options, as Steven says much depends on your budget. I have an Epson V500, that I use for 35mm and 120. for the money the scans are pretty good. I am sure others will be along with other suggestions.
 
Yeh, the V500 is a very solid performer and at a reasonable price. Plus they hold their value.
 
I use a Plustek 7500i which is 135 only, but has the option of an infrared scan to identify and remove dust (for C41 and E6), and can also do multi-scans which can help sometimes. The negative and slide holders are better than my experience of the V500 135 neg holders.
 
I use a Nikon Cool Scan lV which is for 35 mm only. The old Nikon scanners are available but are not cheap, they seem to hold their value and work adequately with software such as ViewScan.
 
I use a Canoscan 8800F for my 35mm and 120 format negs.

I believe it was updated/replaced by the 9900f of which I googled only to find the price a tad expensive tbh but saying that I've had mine a number of years.and let's be honest they are an item that generally don't need replacing often so long term they typically pay for themselves.
 
Thanks everyone. I've looked a few of these ones up. Might have to wait till after Christmas now though as i simply can't afford it.
Asha, my mate has the 9000f mark II and looks to scan very well. I didn't look at previous models. Will have a skeet at those too. Cheers :)
 
Depends on budget, Kodak Pakon 135 or 135 Plus Can do the magic.
 
Chunky, what format are you going to be scanning? If its only 35mm I might be able to help

I only shoot in 35mm these days. I didn't catch the medium format bug :)

Not sure where you are based But if you ever need help with 35mm Scanning, I can scan negs for you free of cost with my fuji frontier as long you dont cut the roll ;) I am based in west yorkshire

I have a Coolscan too - they're great pieces of kit. I bought two (entirely by accident) scanners, the Nikon and a Canon flatbed, and did a little comparison here: http://www.35millimetre.co.uk/post/84549859953/film-scanner-comparison. Got rid of the flatbed as at the time I only wanted to work in 35mm format, it's surprising to see how well the Coolscans hold their value.

People should remember that almost any heritage scanner works with any operating system if you Use Vuescan. I bought it quite a few years ago and it works with all three of my scanning devices Minolta dual scan 2 Canon 8600f and my print scanner epson sx215 it works with over 3000 different scanners of all ages and types.

It solves the problem that scanner makers do not update their scan drivers for older machines or with new operating system updates.

It also solves the problem of having to learn a new software with every change of scanner
