Here is my problem,my sister lives in a high rise flat, she has vrigin but has ordered bt nfinity 1.
The problem is her master socket is in the living room & her pc is in the bedroom.
Her master socket is an old single plug in with broad type plug on it.
She asked bt about putting another box in the bedroom but they want £200 to do this.
Is there anyway round this,i don,t know much about phone sockets, would this work below.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Telephone-...34&sr=8-7&keywords=extension+telephone+socket

Or an extension from one of the router LAN sockets to the pooter? 'Tiz wot I've done.

Told you i don,t know much about sockets & stuff:runaway::D

I'm running an extension (not 10m though) from the socket to a HomeHub5 without any noticeable issues or impacts on data speed. In my case purely because the phone socket doesn't have a nearby power socket and phone extension cable is a lot tidier and easier to clip around a door frame than a power extension. But as long as the walls don't obstruct a wireless signal, why not just leave the HH in the living room?

I'm running what must be about a 10m extension from the master socket in the hall to the study at the other end of the house. The reason being my desktop pc isn't wifi enabled. BT Infinity runs just fine - in fact everything seems slicker on the ancient XP desktop than it does sitting in the living room using my W10 laptop on wifi. The master socket has just one socket so I have a splitter in there. It sounds like everything they say you shouldn't do, but it does work. But if I was all wifi I'd probably have the hub by the master socket.

thats just a filtered faceplate. just use the filter they supply.
Cheers for that, but what i am thinking it will be something less plugged in.:)

I am thinking alog those lines now.:)

Thanks for that,i think probably wireless is the way i will set it up for her,i don,t want her to spend anymore than she needs to.
She had an email or text, not sure saying her connection date will be the 6th,thursday,so she should get router around wednesday.:)

You could plug the router in, in the living room and get a long Ethernet cable to go from the router to the PC in the bedroom. Not too expensive and if you order in time, should arrive in time for Thursday...

Not sure if it'll be kind enough, but you should get a long Ethernet cable with the hub ?

Another option - although slightly more expensive than a long Ethernet cable - although easier to install depending on how easy it is to run a cable from living room to bedroom, is a set of homeplugs...

You don,t get a long enough ethernet cable with the hub,but is a thought.:)

I don,t think she will want that, but worth a look.:)

I have a 15m Ethernet cable running off the phone hub. Make sure you get Cat 6 to take full advantage of the hub's Gigabit Ethernet speed. Plenty on eBay or Amazon.

Cat5e is fine for gigabit over the lengths being talked about.

Thanks guys.:)

What about a powerline network? Hub to powerline, in the living room, PC to powerline in the bedroom. It just uses the ring main as a network.

I don,t think she will want that, but worth a look.:)

We've a set of the power line homeplugs and they work a treat and as the have a plug socket in them aswell, then 1 has the router plugged into it and the other end has our freesat box plugged into it and the Ethernet cable in and giving us on line with the freesat box, which wouldn't otherwise be possible...

Certainly an easy option if nothing else [emoji3]

Powerline depends on your wiring - tried it here and it didn't work. I have a set kicking around that I could put on the Classifieds with try-before-you-buy just for you?

Have run a 15M extension from a BT Infinity 2 system with no problem at all. Also tried Powerline Plugs. Those worked well too

Thank you all,i think i have sorted out what is going to happen with it,i will be driving through to my sister.s house on friday to sort it out, hopefuly.:):D

Hi
Slightly late to this thread but when I got mine via PlusNet (effectively the same this but PlusNet order from BT etc) this included a relocation of the master socket by up to 50m (I think it was 50m, certainly was reasonably distance).
Might be worth checking out with a third party provider

Cheers for that, but she has not set anything up with bt as they wanted silly money to put another socket in.
I should have it sorted now to go & do it on friday for her.:)

True, but if you need to buy a long Ethernet cable why not future proof for little additional cost?

I wouldn't bother, the current speed restriction is in the link between the house and exchange (76Mbit/s maximum). Cat 6 is less easy to work with as the cable is slightly thicker and not as flexible.

If you absolutely have to move the router away from the master socket, there are a couple of alternatives:

  1. get a long RJ11 cable and run that from the infinity socket to the router.
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/World-Data...TF8&qid=1475669641&sr=8-1&keywords=RJ11+cable
  2. use the terminals inside the faceplate to wire an extension.
    https://www.vmadmin.co.uk/other/357...ster-socket-to-any-household-extension-socket
Option 2 is a little neater as it means there's no plug sticking out of the front of the socket.

I have bought an RJ 11 to go through a little hole in the wall, which i will do on friday.:)
