I've got 2 Canon 550EXs which are getting on a bit. Also got a super powerful Metz 45-CL4 but it's not very controllable on manual (1/4,1/2 or full power!)

I like to control the flashes on location, need same or more power as 550s (55 guide), but don't need the full IR control as I'm using them MANUALLY and firing them with the hotshoe Elinchrom Skyport system.

I could go and buy the newer 580EXs, but I would be paying a lot for lots of functionality I will never use, ie: I only shoot manual, never use slaves etc.

I'm either looking for:

1. Anyones opinion of other strobes, I could use with the wireless radio Skyport system. Can I use Nikon SB800s?

2. Anyone recommending different strobes solutions that combine power and simplicity.

3. Anyone want to sell their strobes/flashes!?

Your Metz has a Guide Number of 45, which is not particularly powerful.

What is wrong with your 550EXs? Good guns, if they're working okay. All the top end high power guns have the E-TTL gubbins built in I'm afraid, unless you're talking Quantum or something.

Personally, I would get a 580EXII and use it with the 550s in full E-TTL auto. There is still a lot of manual override control available. Or use them with the Skyports.
