Folks, Im not much into Photoshop and been trying this for ages to add a christmas type/sant hat onto an image for me to use as christmas cards. The pic is of my dog with a christmas type collar on but i need a santa hat added to make it more christmassy( if thats a word). Both the dog and hat are on a white background and i can't find how to add the hat without it looking very unrealistic..Anyone share some info for me to try--remembering I'm very new to adding things in photoshop..Cheers...

Without seeing what your seeing it's a guess, but try adding just a hint of shadow under the rim of the hat, it gives it a sort of 3d realism-ish, although we see shadows all the time we don't really notice till they are missing. You could post the pics here and let us see (or play) ;)

hmmmm... maybe look on my flickr?

In PS, I hit the 'w' key, and selected the areas of the hat I wanted, then clicked on 'refine edge' at the top. I then (in the new window) licked on smart radius at 1.4px, used the brush to swipe over the areas that the 'w' had not picked up. then clicked on 'decontaminate' and reduced this to 5. Then ok.
Back on the main PS page, I clicked and held the mask and dragged it to the trash & also trashed the original.

I then used the eraser tool with a scrubby type shape and made the hat rim smaller.

then I used the move tool and dragged it to the orignal dog pic.

Hat not quite right, so I clicked on 'edit' then 'transform' and dragged the dots so the hat squashed a bit, and for a 1 minute edit I think it looks ok

(one suggestion - if you're taking a pic of the hat separately, put it on something round like a football - makes it look much more real. That, or invest in a LOT of tripe sticks! ;) LOL! )

I think the hat is too narrow at the brim....have you got another hat pic, or maybe make this hat bigger?

Why can I not upload an image to this blasted site? I give up see link below

Dare I suggest doing it the old fashioned way? Put the hat on the dog then take the photograph...

While it's possible to cut the hat out and pop it on the pooch's head in PP, getting it to look even vaguely natural will be anything but easy or quick! (Better get the collar colour closer to the hat as well...)

Some fab peeps on here can do this sorta stuff way better than me but had a try to see if it is any nearer the look your after.
