Yes
I'm going on a trip to Egypt in December to take some photos of all the deprived/poorer areas of the country and im going to be taking photos and doing case studies for the charity im working for.

Most of the shots are going to be portrait shots and I own the kit lens which came with my D3200 18-55mm and I want to buy a 50mm lens because from what I've seen its a fairly good portrait lens. My budget is about £150 max

If someone can give me advice that will be highly appreciated

Note: I have also been looking at the 55-200mm lens too, is that better for portraits?

Depends how close you get to your subjects.
With a 200 on a crop sensor you can fill the frame with just a head shot from a reasonable distance, and not scare your subject by being too close. Non-photographers don't normally realise how 'close' you actually are. The trade off is available aperture, though this will probably not be a problem with the available light.

Wider angle lenses enable you to take pics of your subjects in their environment.

It's all swings and roundabouts, it depends what your intentions are. And will you change your mind when you are there?
