Hi, I'm trying to sort out my mum's camera for her.
It's a Canon EOS 400D (yes, a few years old). It says "busy" and won't take a photo.
It's set to Auto, the battery is full, memory card empty and it doesn't make a difference wether I'm outside, inside, pop flash up or down or turn it to manual. I'm out of ideas and would really appreciate anyone's thoughts.

Sorry if this is posted in the wrong section, I have limited Internet availability on my visit and could only quickly glance through.

sounds like a firmware fault - busy usually means its clearing the buffer to the card, but should only last a second or so

If its permanently on then summats up

Have you tried taking the battery out and leaving it out for a while ?

The other possibility would be a firmware upgrade

I would say take it to a dealer but 400Ds are so cheap second hand that the cost of a dealer repair will be more than the cost of buying a replacement

Okay... now to sound even less like I know what I'm doing... how would I go about doing a firmware upgrade?

I'll try the battery first.

in basic terms you copy the downloaded update to a memory card and put it in the camera and follow instructions

see here http://web.canon.jp/imaging/eosdigital3/e4kr3_firmware-e.html

there's also this relatively useful video of the process Watch it with the sound off unless you like crappy trance music
