So I have a deck that runs along the front of my gallery (shed). It's been down over 5 years and it's possible it was never treated when it was laid - I think it's pressure treated timber.

Over winter it get really slippery. Since actual members of the public walk on it, that's a concern. I've waited for dry weather and hit it with some algae killer. That seems to be doing its job. However, it looks like this....

The dark bits don't really look any better when I scrub them with a wire brush. For obvious reasons I don't really want to scrub the whole thing (it's about 10 X 1 metres) and a floor sander will take off the ridges.

If I oil it, then it will look just as nasty but kind of wet.

Is there anything I can paint on it to make it look nice? It gets a lot of sun and a bit of foot traffic.
 
A nice dark stain would be ok I would think. I got some of Wicks' own brand stuff last year to paint over our wooden garden furniture (which incidentally was left out ALL winter). Granted, we dont walk on it, but i know that it doesnt get slippery when wet.

I too have a slippery deck. The best way to deal with it is with a pressure washer, get some wellies on and blast away. If you do it in spring and autumn you should be ok for the whole year. I only do mine in the spring as I don't have the public on it and it. The trouble with putting a finish on it is that exposed to the elements and with obly certain bits getting the foot traffic it'll look crap pretty quickly.

As Wookee said, pressure washer is the best way to go. I have a 'patio cleaner' adapter that works a treat on our decking.
Also, I find using a big paint brush to stain it a lot better than those pole and pad things you see in diy stores proclaiming to make staining decking dead easy, they don't!
 
Hmm, I gave away my pressure washer a couple of years ago because I wasn't using it........
 
Hey Jonathan. I've got a similar deck that gets really mucky as I do a lot of gardening. And im on about REALLY mucky, stuck on leaves, mud etc. I use a karcher pressure washer with a rotating tip and it gets rid of it all. And there is a paticular brand of deck cleaner that I used once (Brought deck back to looking new) If i remember what it was called, ill post here.
