Just got a yongnuo rf-602/c flash trigger today for my 5d m2 so gave it a go in the house tonight. No doubt it's user error but so far I think I've wasted my money. Too slow a shutter speed and I'm getting a complete White out and too fast and I get 1/2 the shutter across my images.my flash is a canon 420ex so as far As I can see I can't manually reduce the power output. Can someone please tell me if I'm doing something wrong

You'll need to learn how to manually set the power for your flash. The shutter speed needs to be around 1/125-1/200th if you aren't exposing for ambient, aperture set to control DoF and then flash power set to control the exposure.

Time to do lots of practice - have fun! :D

I think that's where I lost,I can't see how I can manually set the flash

You need to Ignore shutter speed effectively! Set it to the fastest sync speed (around 1/200th) and control exposure manually using aperture, iso and flash power settings! Also these triggers do not pass any fancy automatic ettl information to the flash, they effectively just give a fire pulse so you can only use them is this fully manual mode!

Flash power settings? Can I do that with a 420ex? I think I should of done my homework before buying as 99% of my shots where intended for portraiture ie f2.8 and under

That's why the 420EXs are cheap, they're no use for OCF work. If you're buying old flashes best to buy Nikon (SB24/25/26/28/80) ones.

Yeah, it was my first flash, something to learn with, maybe time for an upgrade just, i take it from your reply then that there is no way of adjusting flash power on the 420ex?

Nope, full power only when using it off-camera

Sorry that was my mistake, I forgot the old 430's couldn't be adjusted off camera! Even the jessops 360afd can be adjusted nowadays!

hi i tried to use a 380 ex which you cannot adjust manually by using extra diffuser [a milk carton]etc ,only tried a few times with limited sucess but i willl persivere as im sure you will also

The info. regarding shutter speed is not quite correct. When you do get a flash that you can control manually, off camera, then you can creatively adjust the shutter speed to control the ambient light in your shots. Faster shutter speed = less ambient light and slower shutter speed = more ambient light. As FIP suggests, the older NIKON slashes are brilliant flashes for Manual OCF and are good value off of e-bay etc.

I use the rf 602's with the yongnuo 460mk II's for portraits and weddings with good results from my 40d and 350d. They are cheap and pretty good. Pm me if you want more info. Rob.

you could try nd gels, i guess, but really, thats not ideal >.>

You're more than likely going to be in the range of f/5.6 f/8 f/9 or f/11 rather than wide open at f/2.8 when shooting with flash unless you're aiming to use flash for fill only?

getnoticed as a newbie to flash photography why wouldnt i use f2.8 or even 1.8 with my nifty fifty
