Just been having a look at tripods cause Bubbs keeps reminding me that I need to buy one!

I have found the Manfrotto 190XPROB and it looks good, does anyone have any opinion on this one?

I will also need (a) head, as I enjoy doing landscapes I am thinking a pan and tilt one would suit my needs slightly better than a ball head. Can anyone offer any advice on whether this is a logical way of thinking and also what a good head would be.

My budget for the pair would be about £150.00.

Thanks

UPDATE - Now I have chosen the legs I am trying to get a head for it, I have found 2, these are:-

Manfrotto 460Mg weighs .43kg max load 3kg £49.95
Manfrotto 488RC2 weighs .67kg max load 8kg £64.95

The main aim would eb for landscape but I may decide in a few months that I want to try other types of photography so don't want to limit my choices. I am a little concered by the weight of all this as legs weight 1.8kg.

Any recommendations?

Thanks

Well I have the 190 PROB Rob and it's a superb tripod. From what I can see the X has a redesigned center column which looks like a pretty good upgrade! I wouldn't hesitate to buy it tbh. As for the head, I use a ball head and find it completely versatile for whatever I'm shooting. Maybe someone who uses a pan and tilt could comment further on their advantages / disadvantages?

Grendel - Isn't that the tripod that weighs the same as a small child! - I bought a Benro CF one off 3Bay & its a Chinese copy of an expensive Gitzo - superbly engineered, sturdy but light to hump around & highly recommended - I also have a "ball" type head on mine btw - You're welcome to borrow it any time Rob ... Paul ;)
PS - Its this one HERE - I got mine from a company based in Wales so didn't pay the ridiculous amount these people want in carriage

found this one in a local shop, its the dogs do-dars! will have to wait for my overtime to come through then I can go shopping ;)

Ive got one, and it suits my needs very well. I tend to need it to go low to the ground, rather than heigh up, but if you are the other way round, you may find it a little short. Its got enough weight to make it sturdy, but certainly not too heavy to take out all day.(Ive just come back from a day walking in the dales, and ive had it tucked under my arm all day with no problems) If you do decide to get it, you might want to consider buying a carry strap a the same time.

Thanks for your comments, much appreciated

I bought one recently, it is my first tripod.

My impressions were very good. I haven't really had a proper chance to use it yet but it seems very flexible. The weight isn't too bad, anything much light and i'd be scared it wouldn't be sturdy enough (even though I know it would be). I haven't carried it anywhere yet though so that'll be the real test.

I got mine with the 460MG head which is a 3way Pan/Tilt type jobbie. Like you i'm into taking landscapes etc and went for that over the ball head.

Thats the legs sorted now need to decide on the head, that apears o be the hardest part to find!

What about the Manfrotto 468RC2

It has a max capacity of 6kg rather than 8 but it has all the other features of the 488. It's lighter and cheaper too and it's going to be my head of choice when I can afford it ;)

As its a ball head does it have the ability to pan left to right without affecting the height seeings?

I am guessing here but do you mean the 486RC2 instead?

Yes!

Would you like me to bring mine to the Curry meet on Saturday for you to have a look at Rob?

If you wouldn't mind would be good to have a peek. do you find yours is a little heavy to carry round all day? or do u give it to beverley to carry?

LOL  Not at all, it's completely managable, especially if you put it in a carry case. I used to have the 490RC4 and that was a beast of a head, it weighed more that the legs! (well it felt like it did anyway )

I'll bring mine along on Saturday, I'll take it off the legs though :)

Now I am confussed, was the 490 the big daddy of all head's that you bought when u got the legs? if so what do u have now?

hard work keeping up with your purchases ;)

all makes sense now, if you could bring it on saturday that would be good, just had a peek at your profile, looks like your kit list has increased, have you been talking to Jon? you know he works on a commision basis

 No my problem is a GF who's into photography too and keeps nicking my kit so I have to keep buying more - well that's my excuse anyway ;) Although Mr Reb is partly to blame too :bonk:

I'll bring the head on sat :)
