My computer hard disk is now choking. I'm getting tired of backing up my files to DVD. I've decided to get an external HDD. I want a HDD that uses the power on the USB and not external power.

WHat do you guys use? WHere can I buy one?

Thank you:)

I buy samsung notebook (2.5") drives and stick them in icy box enclosures. Brilliant.

Tesco have some at a good price. I bought a 500gb hdd in PC World and then spotted it in Tesco the next day for £25 less....

A lot depends on where you want to use it, for portability I would suggest the laptop drive based ones no psu and small, for desk top use I would reccomend the 3.5" drives, just bought a 500GB from argos at £65.

You'd be better off slipping another HD into the PC, faster/quieter/cheaper and less chance of the cat eating it :)

Thanks for all your inputs, I got a lot of reading to do.
:)
I just picked up a 500gig 2.5inch (notebook) hard drive for under £90 from scan. Add £10 for an external USB cage, and you have a 500 gig bus powered HDD for under £100. Bargin.

Do you mind giving a link to what enclosure and hdd you bought? I thought the enclosures are limited to 100gb only.

EeeyyCarrumba they get cheaper all the time.

However as a salient point. I wouldnt trust ALL of my data to one external drive.
Make sure that you have it in at least 2 places. Even if one of them is your PC.
Ie when you run out of space on your PC and you "delete" it off remember
that you now only have one copy on your external drive. If that goes ... phut...

Thats why I have an external hard drive that I back up to a 2nd hard drive that lives most of the time in my office at work. It comes home about once a month for a refresher.
