Yes
hiya guys,
1 -appologies if this is the wrong place for it!

but I was at the Renualt world series today and just as I was photographing the F1 renualt car go round the track, my camera died!
it's a Canon 450D SLR Camera, only had it for 1 year (+3 months)
but i got the message "err 99 shooting is not possible turn the power switch to off and ob again or re-install the battery"

So i took the battery cartridge out, put it back -still the message, changed my batteries, still the message, took the battery grip off, and put single battery in, still the message.

However it DOES squeek turning it on or off, or if you open the memory card door, when i change lens...

does it sound more like the shutter? rather than the camera telling me its the battery??

does not help that i need my only SLR tomorrow at Silverstone, will just have to carry on using my G9 camera, but its soooo slow!

will have to take it to camera shop monday... hope i can get it fixed... or i'm really in trouble as i've got lots of photos events in the next few weeks... :bang:

:help:

99 is a bit of a catch-all error, it'll be worth giving the contacts on the lens and camera body a clean, and trying a different battery and memory card to see if any of that helps.

Does it happen with more than one lens?

Neil

Err 99 is a pain in the bum

as above and also remove the tiny battery that powers the internal clock.

if that doesn't fix it, it will need to go back to canon.

i had an err99 on my 40D after 4 weeks, it was replaced by Jessops as it was so new.

i feel your pain, much sympathy :(

Before panicking, try a reset, like BT I'm not a Canon user, but it tells you how to do it in your manual - hopefull that will do the trick :)

tried that -thanks but

changed batterys, memory cards, and lenses whilst at silverstone, and have since cleaned the contacts.... nope

I just can't believe it, my camera dying... I took it to Holland a few weeks after getting it last year, its been to Silverstone testing, local events, Australia for a month back in march as well as the f1 gp, and put up with high temps, Silverstone F1 GP a few weekends ago, football tournemant last saturday.. and then renualt today...

my first SLR too.. I was sat in luffield stand hopping mad... well at least it has died after a few shots of the F1 renualt car...

though my brother has come to my rescue.. he's lending me his 5dmkII camera and lenses tomorrow :)

talk about every cloud :D

that is one special brother

Hope you manage to get it sorted out and it's not too expensive :nono:

Definately a  for that very kind gesture from your brother

............though my brother has come to my rescue.. he's lending me his 5dmkII camera and lenses tomorrow :)

Hope he lent you a *big* lens - you are far enough away from the action at Silverstone even with a 1.6 crop.

Best of luck tomorrow - and if your camera is out of warranty you might try Fixation in Vauxhall for a repair - they'll do you a free quote.

Neil

My Canon EOS 400D had the same fault when i was using my 28_210mm lens last year ??
sometimes it would work other time nothing but error99 ??
It works ok on my 18-55 amd 75-300mm lenses so went to jessops and they told my that it was my lens and the chip had gone down and would cost me as much for a new chip as it would for a new lens.
Being disabled and only on a low income I have had to do without the lens,I was told that if i cleaned the contacts with the lead from a pencile on the contacts it might work but nothing.
So try your other lenses and see if you get the same message then you will know if its the lens or you cam, then you can get the lens tested by trying it on another cam.
Hope you get it sorted.
John

Han if it were me, and assuming you bought the camera from new i would definitely be going down the "not fit for purpose route" with the dealer, unless you have done some astronomical shutter actuation's on it, a camera of that quality dying after 14 months is not on, but first of all give trading standards a call to get all the proper info/ammo you need, so as when you take it back they can see you know what your talking about and you mean business ;)

OMG - I think it must be a Silverstone thing! We were there today, my kit lens worked just fine as normal, but I has MAJOR problems with my Tamron 70-200mm - the stupid thing just wasn't playing ball. Although I am also not sure if it was the photographer??!!

Sorry to hijack your thread HannahC, but I'm hoping either you, or someone else can help!

I think the autofocus is shot - it simply isn't focussing right - zoom in to a spot, half-press the button, and the focussing goes haywire! Tried on manual focus (on both Av, Tv, M, P and auto) and it simply wouldn't take photo -said the exposure was bang-on, but wouldn't take? Swore at it. Tried again. It tried to take a shot, took about 1 second (it was on Tv set at 1/250) then came up with the err 99 message. Switched it off, swore at it some more, on again, and it did take some photos on all settings, provided that I only used manual focus, otherwise it couldn't focus on anything, and wouldn't take shot.

So.....the lens, or me???

have you tried following some of the suggestions already made here? i.e. cleaning contacts between lens and body?

ERR99 is a catchall code though. I had it on my 40D with a broken shutter.

I can recommend Colchester Cameras for fixes. Canon approved and turned around my 400D in 6 days from sending to receiving back.

not sure youll get far with that one, it obviously has been fit for its purpose for the last 14 months.. retailers generally give 28 days for returns like this otherwise its warrenty with the manufacturer issue. if its out of warrenty then its probably a chargable repair.

"not fit for purpose" is described as:

The goods must be fit for their purpose. The goods must be fit for all the purposes for which they are normally supplied and, in addition, if you bought the goods for a specific purpose and made that purpose known to the seller then the goods must be suitable for that purpose. For example, if a shop says a particular paint is suitable for outdoor use, then it should be.

The following is from another forum & was in relation to a fridge freezer.
Not sure if it would apply to camera gear but maybe worth a call

I was told that because it was out of the 12 month manufacturers guarantee and because we hadn't taken out one of their extended warranties they were going to do sweet FA about it.

I thought this was a bit rich in view of the time we had had it and the price paid, so I made a quick call to the Trading Standards Office, who very kindly informed me that because it was a relatively expensive item, under the Sale of Goods Act 1971 it should last for at least six years and if it doesn't Comet, or whoever you buy it from has got to repair or replace it, whichever is cheaper/easier for them.

Armed with this newfound knowledge I recalled Comet and told them and was greated by the reply of " Ah yes, you are quite right".

It's funny, although understandable for a money-grabbing bunch of t@ats, that they hadn't bothered to tell me this when I first phoned up.

Here is a nice LINKY

I would have to disagree Neil on the basis that i've actually known it to be done, just because a warranty is only normally for 12 months, in general things are expected to last longer, and i don't mean 14 months :)

hey guys
thanks for your help, yep tried swapping lenses and it didn't work, deffo the camera... well it squeeks whatever you do to it,
so I know its NOT the lenses..

anyway my brother spoke to the canon camera shop and told them the problem, gave him a ticket no. and said for me to bring it in with proof of perchese (spelling),
so i did, just had to fill in the form, and the receptionist said it will be fixed for free for 'goodwill' unless they find it had been dropped, but told them its not been dropped its been around the world with me, taken millions of photos and DIED when taking a photo of Adam Khan in an F1 car on track at Silverstone on sat...

i had tears in my eyes handing over my camera (stupied i know.. but...!)

Anyway My brother DID give me his camera on sunday, think it was with the 70-200 lens with the conveter.. -very heavy for my tiny wrist though!
(if your interest photos are http://www.flickr.com/heczonephotography)
:sulk::(:(
Now its just a waiting game for my camera to be returned...........
:(

:(

"Traveled around the world with me" = Been banged about in the hold of many aeroplanes, ships and car boots!
"Taken millions of photos" = Used well beyond what would be deemed the reasonable life of a shutter.

Did you really just give them two very good reasons to charge you?

I hope she took those statements to be over exaggerated ...slightly ;)

Hope it comes back to you soon. I know I felt completely lost without mine when I had to send it in for a new shutter. Thankfully it was only a few days for me.

true, but seeing as I was in Australia march/april for the month.... suffered 14 take offs/landings, and had be fine all the while since saturday... my hunch is its got a worn out shutter...

well I do have a habbit of taking 1000 photos on alot of motorsporting events! or recently for the local kids football tournement....

but life without my camera isn't nice..
i've missed SPOOKY moon shots, and then this morning the squirrel was darting bout my garden like he was on drugs, and THEN ran up my bird feeding station -but only got a naff pic of him sitting on one of my feeders... usuing my G9 that I seem to shake to pieces!

European legislation actually dicates that an item of that value has to be coverd for two years under warranty. Sure there was a thread on here some time ago that had the link tothe relevant legislation but can't find it right now. Might be worth looking down that route if they do get sticky with their goodwill repair.
Good luck!

Hannah, your lucky!

My old 400D developed same fault at 14 months old when I had it a couple of years ago and Canon point blank refused to repair under warranty as it had gone over 12 months. Turned out the shutter had gone on it even though it had only taken 15k shots. Cost me £130 to get it sorted.

PITA yes, but at least it hasnt cost you any pennies so not all bad.

Hmmm, it isn't or shouldn't be a gesture of good will. Under the Sale of Goods Act 1979 and I think? the Sale or Supply of goods Act 1982 European Union.

You have certain rights for these type of goods for up to 6 yrs, yes 6 yrs.

O.K After 6 Months the owness is on YOU to prove the fault was there before sale, but quite honestly if you have a catastrophic failure of something that should be reasonably expected to last for more than, in this case, 13 months you should be entitled to a replacement or a full refund.

In fact BEFORE 6 Months it is up to you what you would like to have a refund, repair or replacement NOT what they like to offer and this is irrespective of any Warranties, Extended Guarantees etc, etc, which are not normally worth the paper they are written on.

You must always go back to the retailer/shop/trader that you bought the item from, NOT the manufacturer as some shops may try and fob you off with!!!...

Also, if the item was bought on a credit card (Over £100) they would have Joint liability for the faulty item under the consumer credit act 1974 Section 75.

So HannahC whilst it may seem that you have got a good deal and I sincerely hope they repair the item to your satisfaction. You could well have been entitled to a replacement or a refund.

I would have suggested you contact your local trading standards dept. if I'd seen this earlier, and well it still might be worth a ring??? it's up to you.

DO, make sure that the repair is satisfactory and ask them if they guarantee the repair and for how long - I would check this out with trading standards also.

Hope this helps a few people.

Most of what I have explained was explained to me recently - I have a battle regarding an 18 Month old Washing Machine and other than paying £30 call out for an engineer to prove the "Inherent" fault assuming this is the case and it cannot be repaired - ( I can guaratee it can't) I will be refunded the £30 and get a replacement Washing Machine ;)

I did put a link in a previous post & sent a pm (no reply) but it may have

Cheers Snoop!

been out and come back, wanted to reply. Just seen your post(s).

:bang::bang::bang:

I recieved a text message this morning at 7:24am saying: "canon alert: camera is repaired and ready for collection"

of course I was an excited little kid and really wanted to wake my brother up and go get my camera!

anyway picked it up, and yes... it was the shutter as I thought.
it was clearned/serviced and given a firmware update too...
all under 'goodwill'

it would have cost about £76.26 but doesn't include VAT.. So maybe next year I put about £100 aside JUST incase it happens again.. unless I get another camera which takes my liking..

so it's good to go, back to snapping away once more...

thanks for the help

Hannah
