Our broadband main socket is in the lounge,we used to get bad signal from our study but after using the broadband extenders on both my husband and mine computers,it worked fine.

Recently, husband renovated the garage and turned it into a workshop as we work at home. Bought a WiFi booster,it connected (signal is strong)but most of the time it went dead or unbearable slow connection. So I plugged in the extenders again but both of them don't work, just shows no internet.

Can anyone please advise how I can sort it out? Please tell me there is a way to do it or we are screwed!

The distance from the main hub to the garage is about 15-20m away.

Thanks in advance and if you need more information, please let me know and I really hope someone can help me out as I don't have a clue what else I can do. Thank you very very much!

Hi

Is the garage wiring on the same ring as the house mains?

If it is, you could use home plugs to extend the ethernet, if you need wifi, plug an old router into the home plug and make it an access pint for wifi.

Also may be worth resetting the boosters and see if you can reconnect them, as a first preference.

Thanks for the reply. The garage wiring is different from the house. The home plugs don't work but it used to work fine.

'plug an old router into the home plug and make it an access pint for wifi.', does it mean I plug the WiFi booster into the home plug? Thanks

I recently had a problem in my (new) house with WiFi. I bought 2 boosters without realising that 2 might interfere with each other.

I got some rally good advice on this forum (including some very cheap but fairly techie solutions). In the end I got this which is a mesh system and far better than extenders. It's not the cheapest solution but it is dead easy and it works really well.

Please can you confirm models of the homeplugs you are using?

Also what router do you have?

Thank you

i also highly recommend the mesh network option, i had extenders but they create their own EXT version of the network, so i have to switch between the main network or the extension, not a problem for a desktop pc for example but its just more convenient and flexible for a mesh to create a seamless extension of the network and your device will just auto switch to whatever it broadcasting the strongest signal

Thanks for sharing your experience! I will have a look at it.

Thanks for the input! Which model do you recommend that doesn't break the bank?

Can you run a wire from the house to the garage?

If you're using Sky, don't they now do a mesh WiFi system? But, why not run an ethernet cable from the Sky router to an ethernet switch in the garage?

You can plug devices straight into the switch with ethernet cables

You can plug laptops ( if that's what you're using) straight into the switch with cables.

Thanks for the reply. I don't know about Sky mesh WiFi system. If we run an ethernet cable from sky hub to the garage, the cable will be on the hallway and exposes. Also the front door would have caught the cable.

Just tried to reset both home plugs, they worked inside the house but once I took them back to the garage, shows 'unidentified network,no internet'.
Thank you, this might be due to both being in separate mains ring.

There are a number of suggestions in the thread what ever you decide with, try and buy from somewhere you can return without major issues or cost.

The best solution would be cable one but as you say you would have to run it in the hallway. Not sure what the layout of the house is, but is there any way of drilling through the wall to get one cable out and into the garage?

Edit: could the issue be with they sky router. My cousin moved from virgin to sky and always complained about the sky router. They are in a 2 bed flat and could not get a signal into the bedroom with the sky one, but the Virgin one had worked just fine.

Thanks for the reply again. I prefer the cable option as it will provide better connection. Unfortunately there is no way to drill through the wall to get the cable out. Not really no way but would require a big job. Anyway, I will bite the bullet and try out the mesh network and see.

Thanks all for the input and will report back once it is sorted.

After reading all the suggestions last night, I bit the bullet and bought this, merely it is cheaper than the BT one and the reviews seem to be better. The items arrived today, took 5 mins to set it up and it works as a treat! We can read the newspaper with pictures, download attachments from email, browser through internet without taking 10 mins to load a page, and we can download the patches for our games! Our internet connect isn't the fastest in the area but it will do and thanks all for the inputs and shared your experiences, it has made our life a lot better! Thank you very much!
