Hi everyone,

I currently have a Panasonic G1, but I'm considering buying a Canon 550d or Nikon D90 for a trip to Hong Kong, as they're better in low light/at high ISO

I've looked at both cameras, read the reviews and handled both in a shop, but still can't decide which one to get. IQ wise they both seem similar but the D90 seems to edge the 550d in lowlight performance (but only just) whilst the 550D feels better in my hands, is slightly smaller and lighter, which might be useful for long days out shooting traveling around Hong Kong.

Perhaps owners of D90's or 550D's could give me their opinions?

What do people think of the Nikon and Canon systems, more in terms of their lenses?

PS Hope I don't start Canon v Nikon arguements lol I'm a relative newbie to photography (started last Nov) and don't really have much knowledge of the 2 brands

I guess a G1 with 14-140mm would be a good walkabout lens and camera for a trip.
If you like to shoot nightlife of Hong Kong, better to have a tripod though.
A Gorillapod would be good for the G1.

Go to a shop and have a play with both to see how they feel and what the menus are like - it may well make your mind up for you

As the OP said in the original post this has already been done

For a trip to HK I would suggest whichever has the best abilities in low light, there are some fantastic night shots to be had from places such as the Star Ferry terminals, the various night markets, inside certain temples (alot don't allow photography).

Have fun it's an awesome place to visit...

D90 for me. Tried both and the quality of the D90 in hand is so much better than the Canon.

If others own nikon then they say nikon is the best. I own a canon so go to a shop and try both. I own a 50d beats nikon equivelent hands down thats my opinion.
good luck

It's no good asking us to decide which you should buy.

Buying is a purely personal choice and your camera has to be your choice.

My reasons for buying one particular camera can be vastly different than someones else, otherwise there would only be one camera and we would all own it.

Man up and pick one:)

this wont help you with your decision, but have you considered buying whilst your out there? I wish I was going on holiday soon, i've got a whole list of lens and gear I wanna buy! lol
