I need a new laptop and I don't do a great deal of photo editing but I do want a great screen (NOT APPLE) for viewing. My budget is a very max of £1000 and was thinking of a DELL Inspiron 17 7000. Not many reviews on it so far.... so any help or other suggestions would be very aprreciated.

Dell are generally pretty reliable. Do you want a laptop that is a substitute for a desktop machine (hence a large screen) or do you want a screen with good resolution?

I'll second PC Specialist. Very configurable - almost like a desktop. You can specify a SSD system disk + HDD which will be a huge improvement over the Dell. You also just get the operating system (Windows 7x64 if you want) and no crapware at all!

I don't know what their current laptop screens are like, but the last one I specified (with "glossy display") had an excellent colour gamut and was very accurate once calibrated. I doubt if they've got any worse - Possibly better. If I needed a desktop replacement type "laptop" for myself I would look no further.

When you find the right laptop for you try ebuyer. :)

I like the high end dells £700/£800+

I work with computers and hate the cheaper Dell's. Batteries never last long before they hold no charge.

Try and get one with an SSD for sure. There brilliant.

Dell Outlet is by FAR the best place to pick up a Windows Machine. When my Macbook sells thats exactly what i'll be doing.

If you want a good screen get an external monitor, varying laptop viewing angles affect things quite a lot.

If not, at least try and avoid gloss and turn off auto brightness.

I'm looking at the Inspiron 15 (probably the Hadley i7 version as I've had a good job pay up this week), looks a good spec for my needs and I've been unable to spec the same elsewhere for close to the Dell price.

If you're looking for a good screen and wanting the larger screen it might be worth looking at the smaller 15.6" chassis and an external monitor. The larger 17" laptops are back-breakers if you need the mobility if a laptop over a desktop.

As long as you buy from the business side if the Dell website you generally get less bloatware than you do if you buy from the home side.

Don't know if you've made your mind up yet or not, but I've had the Inspiron 15 for a few days now. An otherwise very nice laptop, but with a s*** keyboard and I think the 17 may be very similar. The screen is however brilliant, possibly the best I've seen on a laptop for viewing angle and with a decent brightness.
