Hi, i'm after some advice regarding which mobile handset .I know i've said in an earlier post that i would consider the iphone ,but alas i've had a wee change of heart ,and i've done my usual and overloaded with information and now my head's fried .

I've narrowed it down to two handsets and i'd like some feedback as to what you guys on here think .

Handsets are the ....

HTC desire ....

Iphone 3Gs .....

Also ,whilst i'm on here ,my wife has the iphone4 ,and to be honest the signal performance is abysmal, one min there's full signal next there's no service ,i believe it's to do with the external antenna (correct me if i'm wrong) and holding the handset in one's hand .She's had the handset for about 2 wks now .Was planning to call vodafone to kick up a fuss seeing as i forked out £170 for the handset 0n an 18 month contract.I read about the signal prob on the Internet ,so i guess if i can do that so can apple .Is there anything i can say or do when i give vodafone a call :D

Having used both handsets I would recommend the HTC desire in a heartbeat.

This phone beats the iphone 3Gs (And 4 tbh) in every respect apart from onboard memory. But since a 16Gb card is dirt cheap I'm not too worried about that.

My friend has an iphone - his battery life after 1 year is less than a day - it is always plugged into his laptop during the afternoon at work. I understand you can't easily change the battery on an iphone...

I currently have a google nexus one - had it for 6 months and the desire is basically the same hardware but slightly improved. Never misses a beat - battery lasts a couple of days. Signal is always good. HTC support is also very good if you have issues (Although the desire is a very reliable piece of hardware).

Have you considered Samsung Galaxy S?

Yeh,i've considered the Galaxy S ,and the Nexus 1,think i'd rather keep it to the handsets i've discussed ,and to be honest it's looking like the desire at the mo  .

My biggest problem is..... i can't make my bloody mind up :D it has to be SHINY :D,thanks for your feedback

Desire, Desire, Desire, Desire, Desire, Desire...................
You probably guessed I love mine!

I was going to get a desire but didn't want to wait 4 weeks to get one. I don't want to wait for my new shiny shiny! Ordered a samsung galaxy instead. I haven't actually got it yet, it should be turning up today. The 4 inch screen swung it for me, especially as it's a super AMOLED

I heard the problems with the desire stock is that they can't get enough AMOLED screens so they're switching to LCD screens. That was enough to put me off permanently.

I seem to be surrounded by phones at the moment as we're testing potential new handsets at work, and I've added a couple to the list that I fancy as a personal phone for "testing" purposes.

So far I've tested the BlackBerry Bold 9700, Nokia E52, Nokia E72, iPhone 4, and the HTC Desire.

For personal use it comes down to you wanting a handset that could potentially replace your iPod, and whether you are hooked on iTunes and the App Store or not. If you've got no ties to Apple in that respect, the Desire is a great handset. The screen is not as good as the iPhone, but it is cheaper and just as capable. I think I prefer HTC's "sense" overlay for Android over the pure Android of the Nexus 1 as well.

If you are an iTunes junkie, then the iPhone will suit you better, especially if you also like some of the apps etc., as the Apps Store for iTunes is considerably better than the Android based Desire, but the Android apps are growing. There is also a lot less "control" over Android apps. This could turn out to be a security risk in the future - but we'll have to wait and see.

If you are a text addict and have lots of friends with BlackBerry's, then the BB Messenger will save you a fortune as it's free to message other BB users. Other than that, the Bold 9700 is more a business handset with an average camera, and it even loses signal with the "death grip" applied. As this is the most "average" among them, I guess they'll choose this at work!

Nokia E52 I found OK for business, a waste of time for personal use thanks to Nokia's screw up in connecting it to things like a GMail account. The E72 is probably the best true mobile among them in terms of features etc., but again is more business orientated.

Android users seem to compare their handset with the iPhone all the time, the problem with that is the fact that with an iPhone it's not just about the hardware - it's about the software you can run on it. Technical issues aside, the Apple App Store has thousands of apps (yes, some are dire!) to cover almost anything you've never thought of doing on a phone before.

RE the antenna - bridging the two antenna's with your hand does cause signal drop and or loss. A colleague at work has an iPhone 4 and it reacts slightly differently to the same grip. Signal drop, but not loss. He is on O2 however and the other one is on Vodafone. Apple are giving away "bumpers" which prevents the bridging problem, however it was still a pretty big oversight on Apple's part. My point is though - the problem is better or worse depending on network carrier and location.

I am making the same decision - Desire Vs iPhone 4 at the moment. The only consideration I have is it will be replacing my iPod Touch which my wife wants - and I have some great games and apps loaded on that and a well managed iTunes library - this puts more points towards the iPhone, even with it's antenna issues. I may well wait until October/November when I believe the production cycle at Apple will have been changed and the newer models will no longer have the antenna problem.

Steve Jobs' announcement last week stipulated free bumpers up to September 30th. Why September 30th? This implies that after that date they will not be needed due to a design change. Apple will not be wanting to give away free bumpers for ever!
