I want a 300mm lens for my sport photography, so what lens is good on the market at the right price.

Here is a list of lenses I have in mine...

A good secondhand Nikon 300 f2.8 D AF lens ( around £1500 )
Sigma APO 300mm F2.8 EX DG/HSM lens

Nikon 300 f4.0 D ED-IF AF-S lens

Have also heard good reports on the APO 120-300mm F2.8 EX DG HSM.

Thanks,

Paul

For sports a bit of zoom is very important IMO. I love my 120-300 2.8 for sports work! I would go for a new sigma than a 2nd hand Nikon with no AF-S. A SWM or HSM is vital for fast moving sports also.

The 300 f4 is a great lens, especially if you want to hand hold it. However, it is fixed length and is only f4. With a 1.4tx you end up at f5.6 which can be a problem.

Get the 120-300 2.8. :D

Cheers Joe T

I am going to have a good look at the 120-300 f/2.8 lens.

Agree with Joe on this one. Get the 120-300 as the flexibility is superb.

I've got the same dilemma Paul (and the water complex at Blenheim really highlighted it), I've been considering a fast 300mm for a while now and have looked at the Sigma 120-300mm but what puts me off is the duplication up to 200mm. Ideally I'd love a Nikon 300mm f/2.8 VR (or even the new 400mm f/2.8 VR :shake:) but the price has put me off, particularly with the forthcoming D300 release.

A second hand Nikon 300mm AF-S would be my second choice followed by the Sigma prime, Pete (Diego Garcia) uses the Sigma to great effect with his rugby shots.

Hacker, have you considered trying a TC-14 convertor with your 70-200vr.
Thom Hogan - see near the end of this review considers this combination superior to the 300mm f4.
Obviously you lose a small amount of range with it only equating to 280mm.
I've got this combination and am very impressed with it.
Even if you move to a longer lens the convertor will still come in useful.

Paul,

I've got the 300mm f2.8 IS L Lens, it's cracking! Expensive but worth every penny.

A non-IS version is on ebay from one of the togs from motorbikeracer.com, it's:-

Don't know how soon you need one, but I'm in Bury, if you local(ish), can meet early evening (not weekends - this week Silverstone, next weekend Rowrah), you can try my lens on your camera to see what you think.

Try Kerso for new lens, he did me a great deal!

Carl.
