Hi

Sorry to ask a question on a topic thats been raised several times before but I want to buy an ND Grad kit for taking pictures outdoors over Xmas - hopefully there'll be some crisp bright skies that will make these essential.... we live in hope!

Anyway, I've read a bit about how they work and for the genericy landscape stuff I want to do I think I need "soft" filters, however presume I mount them so that the filter is at the top of my picture, but then i try to rotate my lens to zoom in a bit more..... is that going to offset the filter I've just fixed into position? - how does it work :help:

I have a 450D and have the 18-55, 55-250, 28-105, all of which are 58mm so I think I just need one adapter ring? - Can anyone point me to an (ideally) all in kit that gives me what i need - I dont want to spend the earth (So no Lee filters for me) - but a complete kit would be good as I am not sure yet i understand all the components I need....

thanks in advance

you can get lenses that dont rotate - however the brackets are free to rotate as well so you can quite easily rotate them back once you have composed the shot.

I use the cokin mount filters - i don't have lenses that rotate anymore as really irritated me after a while. but its not hard to work around. THe bracket comes with a stepping ring which simply clip together which allows the ortation of the flilter bracket.

yeah sorry assumed he meant focusing.

You don't have to use a holder with grad filters.

You can just press it firmly against the rim of the lens while you press the shutter. If you have a circular filter (eg a polariser ) on the end of the lens you hold the grad against it instead. It's really easy if you use a tripod , and possible with practice if not. In my opinion, the less fiddling around with bits and bobs you have to do, the more likely you are to use something.

Personally, I would look at hard grads first - I use 1 and 2 stop hard grads. In combination with a polariser and one of the grads you can get excellent natural looking skies.
