ND Grad filters and very sunny skies

I am getting a 3 pack of ND grad filters, .3, .6 and .9. I was wondering if I was shooting a landscape scene in nice mediteranean sunshine and say needed a long exposure, would the filters be sufficient to ensure that I could expose the foreground?

Does that make sense? Hope so, as this is a learning curve for me.

Yes, a 0.6 will be useful.

Always best not to shoot when its very sunny (harsh shadows), a bit of cloud or overcast light is always nicer.

I think you might be on about just plain ND filters if your after soft water during the day. These have no grad in them and are just a constant density covering the whole filter.
These come in the same kinds of sets as the grads. 0.3, 0.6, 0.9.......then you can go into really dark ones like 110.
