ND Filters

Hi

I have been looking at getting my hands on some ND filters to play around with. The LEE filters look amazing but incredible expensive. I want to know what is the most recommended?
1. Variable ND filters
2. A set of different non-variable filters like ND4 and ND8
3. The filters that don't screw on to the end of your lens, they are square and sort of slide into place at the front of your lens

What is best for image quality? :)
 
The cheaper square filters are cokin although you can get even cheaper compatible ones. The link below are cheap and get favourable reviews
