Does anyone here dabble in recording nature sounds, things like the morning chorus, ambient nature sounds?
It’s something that I plan to do more of, am more interested just in recording general ambient sounds like birds in the morning, frogs in the spring that sort of thing
I have an inexpensive handheld recorder a Tascam DR05 and a pair of Clippy mics
I started years ago recording sea birds on Skokholm, Puffins and Shearwaters but until recently hadn’t been recording since
Did record some amazing ambient sounds in Zambia on camping safari just by setting up the recorder running overnight
Plan for this Spring is have a go local to home, the hardest part in the UK is finding somewhere that doesn’t have traffic noise

I have an old pocket Zoom H4n Pro,

Software is good as well. I find the manipulation process time consuming but the resulting isolated sounds can be very rewarding.

With the Zoom you could filter out most of the background traffic noise and isolate the sound you are after so long as there is a significant difference from the background noise, A fair while since I had a play with it to be honest.
 
I haven’t really done any manipulation as such, at the moment am using Audacity program to cut the recording into clips
It is very rewarding though am looking forward to the Spring and getting out and about, planning to record while I’m out with the camera
 
I took mine to India once, the early morning bird and monkey calls were something else, I seem to recall grasshoppers and wrens were particularly nice also. you can slow the sounds down or speed them up, as you like. There is so much in a simple bird call when you slow it all down a bit, incredible, you will have great fun!
 
is there a go-to 'My First Microphone' for an iphone which would let me do some recording and give Merlin bird ID a better chance of success?
 
Interesting to read this and what folks have been using.

I have long thought it would be nice to a have a hardwired microphone in the garden to hear and record the bird song and other natural sounds ( bees buzzing as an example). But have yet to look into it :(
 
The Wildlife Accoustics Songmeter range do exactly this if you want something tried and tested. No doubt other options are available. I can't vouch for them but I do use their EMT ultrasonic mic and recording/analysis software for bat surveying
