Following on from the thread here....

…..I printed the following shot out A4 size on the crappy printer at work, slung it in an old frame that I was going to bin and gave it to my neighbours yesterday evening.

They loved it. Until I reported on the feedback I’d received here that is  Now they can see all the unflattering shadows too! :bonk: As a result, camera-shy Phil is now open to all sorts of suggestions in terms of roping family and friends in to hold reflectors and so on. A complete volte-face and going against his innate aversion to cameras, he's as determined as I am to nail the shot

We’ve got everything from those silver car windscreen deflector thingies to huge white polystyrene boards at our disposal. What should I use and where ought I to place them for the best effect? I intend to attempt this shot again on a bright sunny evening. Were you sitting in the place of the subject, the sun would be at about 11 o’clock and fairly low in the sky.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

As you have a willing subject, why not take advantage of it and experiment.

My initial thoughts were to have a white board under his chin, and reflector to his left, I might even have his back to the sun (so he's not squinting) and light his face with combo of reflectors and fill in flash?

Here's a grab from a Dean Collins instructional video:

There's a diffusion panel on the right, a black panel for negative fill and an assistant with a flexible mirror for hairlight on the left.

You can download a booklet for DIY panels: http://www.software-cinema.com/page/13/tinkertubes
