Just reading a story on the Facebook page of a Spanish newspaper about British police that will be joining their Spanish colleagues on patrol in Benidorm this summer. The comments from followers of the page are in general quite uncomplimentary about us. Drunk and fat seem to be the themes!

Justified or not?

Do you have any prejudices against any particular nationality or believe they conform to a stereotype?

Never been to Benidorm so can't comment :)

We all do it at some point, when I find myself thinking in a stereotypical way I stop and work out why I'm doing it and then try to rethink my position. It's easier for me perhaps because I've always been able to see the other persons viewpoint.

It's a natural cognitive process without stereotyping we would become overwhelmed making sense of the world. It's how we stereotype that's the problem.

If you live in Benidorm or Kavos and the like, I can certainly see why people will be uncomplimentary about us

Whereas if you live in New York you will find we're charming and intelligent.

Unfortunately - that's also 'stereotyping' both the kind of people who visit Benidorm and NY.

As @jakeblu said though, it's a natural process, we just have to be aware of it when we're making any important judgements in life, but the shorthand is fine for the majority of the time, so long as we're prepared to be surprised by people.

And as for the Germans!

What sprang to mind as you read that?

Most racial stereotypes melt away when you get to know and become friends with individuals of that particular race, though there may be exceptions.

Possibly, although am currently in Cyprus and the stereotype of cypriots being lazy is 100% true!

Is that a stereotype?

I've not heard it before.

Who has said that about Cypriots?

Cypriots do about themselves, and so do the Brits over here. The guy we have hired a car from last 2 times has said that, he even joked he was not a true cypriot as he turned up on time!

From my limited experience in Germany, the stereotype about the trains is true also (and the one about UK trains too!)

Interesting.

I guess I'm not a true Englishman then.

I don't apologise for everything. I'm not self deprecating. I'm not into spanking for sexual pleasure, and I'm not gay.

I'm not a football hooligan. I don't vomit in the street on Friday nights, and I don't hate Krauts.

Never heard that as a stereotype of Brits before

edit

I decided to remove that rather full on link.

Just google english and spanking.

You'll get the idea.

FWIW German trains haven't run on time when I've used them, nor are they humourless rule-followers (is there a link?).

Just thought of another 2...

Germans will win a penalty shoot out, and England will do naff all at the next football tournament!

Fat[ter than me] and naked...

And all called Nick.

Oh no I've only gone and done it myself!

IME, more likely to be called Manolis (a contraction of Emmanuel) while girls are Maria or Eleni.

Never heard that as a stereotype of Brits before

Flagellation is known as the English Vice by some nationalities.
