Just found this option on the NLS site - http://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/# I don't know if it is available elsewhere.

It allows you to chose a place and shows a map of the area (different maps for different times can be chosen). The slider at the bottom of the panel on the left allows an overlay of the current map to show through.

I found it interesting to see how places have changed over time.

Although it is from the NLS it isn't restricted to Scotland.

Cool, seeing how my area has changed over the last couple of hundred years. The landscape remains much the same but roads and buildings increase dramatically.
 
I have friends who go metal detecting and often use those maps to give them an idea of what might be underground. As for me, I just find them very, very addictive.
