Just after a little bit of advice. Think of adding a NAS drive as some storage.

I want to use it for

1. Streaming Media files to apple TV
2. Itunes server.
3. Long term storage of photo files (1 of many places).

So my thoughts are a 3TB WD My book Live. or do I really need to lash out stacks of money on a Synology enclosure? I will be using it over a wireless network and only connecting ethernet cable if I am doing big file transfers (once in a blue moon).

thoughts?

If you are going to stream HD media files, wireless may not cut it (it didn't for me)....

It seems ok using a small Linkstation mini,

Use a time capsule as my router.

It is completely dependant on your environment (distance, other signals, quality of signal etc...). If it works, great but I found I had problems when I was going any distance (I have since changed my wireless access point and have a much better signal now, so it may be different - I haven't tried as I installed some homeplugs)

id also say cable it for HD if possible.

while it may work (my WDTV did) if the wireless has other traffic (the missus hammering youtube for example) it may have an impact. id always prefer to have a gig ethernet.
