Hi Guys,
I am looking to add some NAS storage to my network preferably in a RAID set up -looking for recommendations on units ,around the 4TB size!

Thanks in advance

Hadn't really thought of a budget ! Say upto £300? ish

id be inclined to stick to standard external drives then, a NAS for that budget isnt going to be possible (or at least one worth getting).

youd spend the £300 on drives alone, assuming you want 4tb mirrored thats 8tb of disk needed. and thats even before working out where you want to backup to..

youre looking at 250 for a 4 bay unit, 300 for a 5 bay unit (qnap are good). plus drives, 3x 2tb in RAID5 will give you ~4tb (just under after overheads), 2tb drives come in at 80/each.

it depends how expandible/upgradable you want it to be. also what are you going to backup to? that needs to be factored in.

I probably only need two 2tb drives- I'd like to be able to drag n drop photos from desktop and laptops to the nas. I had a single WD nas drive which blew up so that's why I fancy the raid set up!

Understood but probably less likely? It's all starting to sound like hassle! Maybe I'll just buy a few external drives! Any one know about online storage?
We have very fast broadband so maybe that's the way forward?

crashing your car isnt likely day to day but you wouldnt drive around with no seatbelts or insurance.

personally i wouldnt touch the cloud with the amount of data i have, would take far too long to retrieve. i prefer a hard drive or two taken to work and put in my drawer.

Build yourself one of these ;):

Seriously, Neil is right. Too much of our daily lives is now on electronic media. IMHO, it's worth investing in some form of backup strategy which has some redundancy built in (i.e. separate backups on separate machines - offsite one of them if you can).

Ha ha that's a beast!! I have got several ext hard drives that I use for back-up but I do miss the ease of a nas but I'm scarred by the demise of the WD unit. Just want something more reliable that's " always there" .
