Hello again fellow forum members.

As I still consider myself to be very much a newbie and having bought a D90 with the stock 18-105mm lens. I feel the time is now right to move upwards and purchase my next lens.

I bought a DSLR to capture some of the moments when I pursue my other hobby which is flyfishing. The kind of pics I would be taking on a regular basis are pictures of fish being hooked, fought and landed including fellow anglers posing with said fish! also, another branch of flyfishing is flytying. For this I intend to get myself a dedicated macro lens and having asked sometime before on here I was given some great advice.

So, in essence what kind of lens should I be looking for when walking the river banks, taking pics of fish, action shots and the occassional close up pic of a mayfly?

Thanks in advance :)

Hi.

If you want "get in really close" macro it could be worth checking out the Sigma 50mm f/2.8 EX DG MACRO lens.

As well as an excellent 50mm portrait lens it will also allow you to get in close to your flytying subject and shoot with all the detail you need. I intend to sell mine (as I don't do macro anymore) and shall place it in the appropriate forum section soon.

Hope this helps.

For that, I would go for reach.

Like the old 150 mm Sigma... which I like a lot! :D

I would say that one of the 70-300 zooms with "macro" (not true macro, just close focussing) would fit the bill. IIRC the Sigma APO one is the pick of the (budget) bunch and should give plenty of reach. The older versions (non HSM) will still AF on your D90 and are usually significantly cheaper 2nd hand than the later HSM ones.

Thanks for th ereplies lads.

Digifrog, I would be very interested in your lens when you decide to sell it.

Nod, what kind of price would I be looking at for the Sigma APO?

I see a lot of mention of prime lenses, are these an option for me?

I would think around £150 but have a look at the ads in the photography magazines to check on dealer prices.

Hi Nod, thanks again for the reply. Does that lens have macro capability too?

HERE is a direct link to the current version on Sigma's site. About 3/4 of the way down THIS page are a couple of Sigma 70-300 lenses but with slightly limited information on them - phone the dealer for more info. (I've dealt with this shop in person and vie the internet and had decent service.)

Forget all the above :D- if you want a true Macro lens- opt for a second hand Sigma 105mm f2.8 - gives a true 1:1 macro and makes and excellent portrait lens too

I have one ( not for sale) its an excellent addition to any Camera Bag

Les

Thanks for the replies there lads. Plenty to go on there. he links are handy as well, will give them a call regarding those sigma lenses.

Would a 50mm prime lens be ok for what I am looking for regarding my OP?

no - get a dedicated macro lens as was suggested..
I use a 150mm Sigma
but
you could get away with a Nikon 60mm F2.8 AF micro (about £160) - the AF-s is £230+ just Ignore the 40mm

Not on its own but with extension tubes it could be used as a Macro lens.

Nifty 50, I have a Nikkor 50mm F1.8 AF Dm picked it up fro around £70 on ebay.
Brilliant little bit of kit.

The obvious lens for this is Canon 70-200- 2.8 mrkII "The duck tape of lenses".

For most of it you should be fine with the lens you have. Do you feel it is lacking anywhere for the shots you want? (Excluding macro).

Then if you want to get into macro, get a proper macro lens, a longish focal length like one of the 100/105/150mm offerings from Canon or Sigma will probably suit your needs - whilst doubling up as an extra option for portraits as already mentioned.

I don't think any Canon fit lens will help him here - he seems to be using a Nikon D90 ;)
