Hmmm, I was sure that there was a separate thread for personal website reviews? Anyway, seeing as I couldn';t find one I've stuck this here.

Right, I've finally managed to secure my own domain name, found some hosting complete with a relatively straight forward site builder and found the time to build my new website.

This is a "needs must" site as I needed it in a hurry before applying for my press pass for the Edinburgh Festival and prior to contacting comics. As such, I'm aware that the way the photos are displayed on the portfolio page isn't the best abd there could be a few added touches that I can work on to make it look a bit slicker, eg using a graphic in the title etc.

All that said, please have a look and let me know what you think. I'm looking for feedback on the site itself rather than the photos.

You can find it here.

TIA NN

Looks like a good starting point to me - clean, simple and to the point! :)

You need to resize your images:

2000px × 3008px (scaled to 300px × 451px)

is massive, as its been scaled to 300x415 i would PP them to this size and reupload them

I mention this as the site will be very slow for people, especially getting to your homepage if they need to download 1.5mb of pictures to view it.

Looks good to me: I think way too many websites try to be too clever anyway. The viewer wants to see what you do, then be able to contact you, which is just what your website does.

I would suggest two things though: centre everything instead of everything being off to the left it, and reduce or thumbnail all those photos: anyone on dial up/slow broadband would have a major problem (I'm on rural broadband at 3Mb and I gave up waiting for the pictures to load).

Good clean site, instant download of all pages and pics! Very 'idiot proof' layout.

Oh and some very good pics!

Hope you enjoy the fringe when you're up here.

Nice, to the point, site. I would echo the points already raised about the photo size - they need to come way down....

Technically its good that it validates for CSS but doesn't for HTML if that matters to you.

But good nontheless.

Cheers,

I appreciate the comments re download speeds, I'm 100 yards from the exchange on an 8mb connection so it all downloads in an instant for me.

I've only used the hosting site's own web building software. I'd need to invest in some more time to be able to create a thumbnail gallery and time's running out. I've tried scaling the photos down to 300 pixels wide, but they then lose all impact. I'll have a go at saving the jpegs at a lower quality compression and see if that helps.

Thanks to all for the feedback, keep it coming!

Ah, thanks for that, I suppose that at the moment I'll have to run the risk of other broswers not being able to view it properly until i can get to grips with Dreamweaver and pull together a better site design. I'd be intertested if anyone does have issues viewing the site with non ie7 browsers.

Also, I've scaled the photos right down so they should load much more quickly.

Well, it's loading and displaying fine in Firefox, Opera, Safari, Netscape Navigator and Flock so it doesn't seem too bad ;). And the photos are loading nicely now as well.
