Years ago when my camera was new I decided that to transfer the photos to the pc I would use the lead that is provided in the box. So, one day I had the camera with my new lens 400mmf5m6l on the table and the photos were being taken off.

In the meantime my Dad who was downstairs and nearly blind was watching tv and suddenly he shouted Fire and I jumped off my chair, caught my hand around the lead and there was an almighty crash, camera and lens slide off the table and landed on the carpet. Time stood still but I had to run down the stairs, got in the lounge and my dear Dad just said I think the fire needs more coal. As he was such a gentle soul, I just said perhaps next time just call my name.

Telling him what had happened upstairs he said if its broken I will replace it for you, thank goodness it was all in working order. Now, when I come inside the camera with lens connected is placed in a box on the carpet in the corner of a room and there it cannot fall any further.
When I see a thread on here title Camera Accident, my heart goes out to you, been there and definatly got the badge.

Much better to take the card out and use a card reader. Yes, cards, readers and card slots in the camera can wear but so can USB sockets and plugs.

Yeah card reader is the way forward. Also hindsight is a wonderful thing. I have dropped lenses in the past and almost cried but luckily it's never been from a height or on to a hard surface.
