Well, after deciding for about a day on wanting a decent compact to take pics of my impending child I was set on buying a TZ7. I then thought to myself that I would be disappointed coming from a 5D Mkii, but I need something that fitted into my pocket.
Having a list of 4 cameras ranging from £100-£250 I came across the S90 and thought that it has got such good reviews im only going to be thinking of what I could have got with it.
OK, so it arrived yesterday, next day from Warehouse Express and here are my BRIEF thoughts. For a more technical review you will have to google it.
First Impressions
WOW !!!!
Second Impressions.
What an incredibly well made piece of kit. It feels expensive without looking it (good for showing in public). Its light (but not too light) ergonomic with a handy thumb type rest on the back showing that someone has actually thought about how this thing is built and overall it just feels like a wonderful example of how a camera can be made. Cool pop up/down flash
Box
You get all the gumf with any canon camera, cables, US charger, instructions and CD etc. Didnt really care, just got the charger out, and plugged in the battery and stared at it until the green LED lit up.
Build
It is as solid as a rock, the buttons all satisfyingly click when pressed and the front dial clicks round reassuringly well. The lens flies out and is ready instantly and retracts just as quick. The screen is large and all the buttons next to it are laid out as most Canon compacts are nowadays. Only problem here is the back scroll wheel can easily get knocked and moved meaning you need to reset whatever you use it for.
Usage
Ive been playing about with this for a day and it is intuitive to use. So much so I have only briefly looked at the instructions. I wanted a camera that used RAW (OK CHDK would work on most Canons, but the last time I used it it just took too long to convert the file) so I could LR it afterwards. I have actually been using AUTO a bit for a change and this works very well getting WB spot on, on all occasions, which is rare even for all the DSLRs ive used.
Also this goes open to f/2.0 and 28mm wide. Brilliant.
Pics
Stunning. It doesnt take much to get a great picture out of this camera. Ive taken some pics and seen them on my PC which I will upload soon enough (im on the MBP at the mo) to show that even on a dull subject you really get a wow factor.
OK, as you can tell I love this camera, so here are some positives and negatives.
Positives
Build quality
RAW
Easy to use
Quality of pics in auto aswell as manual
Your missus wont realise it costs over £300 as its so inconspicuous
Cracking front dial
f/2.0 + 28mm
Negatives
No adjustable focus point
Easily knockable rear dial
Your friends wont realise it costs over £300 as its so inconspicuous
Only 3.8x zoom (who cares)
Im certainly no expert, but what I have done, is tried a lot of cameras (pretty much all of the Canon DSLR range and quite a few compacts including G9, 100IS) and the S90 stands well above any compact ive used and even above some DSLRs. OK you can get the kind of artistic creativity that you can with a high end DSLR, but for something that fits in the pocket it is amazing.
If you have £250 burning a hole in your pocket, then add £80, spend it, and fill the gap in your pocket with this little beauty.
