Hello everyone and especially complete beginners to photography.
I have just completed my first year using a DSLR, a Nikon D3100 and a D70s.
The D3100 is equipped with a 35mm prime lens and the D70s has a 50mm prime lens.
These have been on my cameras practically since I got them, and so far I haven't found any need or desire to change them.
In the beginning, well I had no real idea of what I was doing I just used point and shoot, full auto, sounds simple, and it was.
For me it lacked creativity, and it was not what I really wanted, I could have done the same with a pocket camera, so right away I was missing the point of having a camera that I could control how things were done.
So I went full manual, and that was a partial success, but in retrospect a very hard lesson and a steep, perhaps too steep learning curve for me.
Gradually I worked my way along taking photographs, and I fell in to sort of a halfway state as I now shoot with aperture priority most of the time.
Joining Talk photography was a massive help and still is, the members on here are fantastic at helping out with anything.
I also got some great advice on why and how my 50mm lens would not work, the lens was fine the operator was useless.
Some very kind member sent me some old school memory cards for my older DSLR, the D70s and that also helped me out tremendously.
Using the internet and other media, I have discovered lots of things, F stops, aperture, depth of field and many more things. Not that I am very skilled with them but its getting there.
I have taken over 2000 photographs, some of which I do like, most of which I am not 100% happy with.
Edit, well that's a whole other show, I use NX studio, which is free, and its useful for Nikon RAW files, I think it good, other people may not.
I also joined a club last year, which is a short drive for me, met some nice people and it very sociable, there are some very skilled people within the club.
Now after a year, I do less snapping and more thinking before I actually press the shutter, with edit I do slight adjustments instead or radical stuff.
Still having lots to learn, with my old tech equipment, it a satisfying journey and full of ups and downs.
My main thought nowadays is composition and how to look for it, which entails having a camera with me or being prepared to go back and at a later time to get some shots.
Lastly putting photographs on here is lovely, and some people like them, which is very encouraging, recently I did enter a club internal comp, which was judged buy a guest. That was another thrilling experience, but having leaned a bit he did say what I was expecting him to say, which was rather satisfying as I felt like I have leaned and progressed.
Didn't win any prizes with my efforts, but again I knew that from the start.
Treated myself to a old SLR Nikon FG-20 and a refurbed 50mm prime lens, so that is waiting in the wings to make an entrance at some point.
So thank you everybody, and for new people who are just starting I hope this short story helps you with your adventures.
