This is a video of my two friends playing somebody I used to know, I filmed and produced it myself. It has been on youtube for a while but I have just found this section on tp and decided to share it with you's :D What do you's think?

Here is the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RpfdMvDH2Xs&list=FLhkCginFRmfg-Ba4hfogaKw&feature=mh_lolz

ps: I couldn't find a video section in the critique, I hope I have posted it in the right place :/

Hi Chris (I assume?)

Firstly, I loved the opening shot.

then...the audio sync is way off which is a huge no no for anything but especially a music video.

In terms of shots, I would have tried to get much more: close up of hands on keyboard, hand on mic, slow mo blinks, soft focusing shots, panning etc to make it a bit more interesting. It's important (as with anything) that your subject is portrayed in the best possible way so long duration shots that shows her kicking her lips getting ready to sing isn't wise...

For the singer to come off like she has some kind of passion into the song, a good tip I learnt from one of Ridley Scott's associate directors is to ramp up the music very loud and have her try to sing over it.

I also noticed there are a few shots that look like they are shot on a mono pod or similar as it is shaky...I don't think there's any excuse for not using a tripod here ;)

Lastly from me: the audio mixing appears to be well in favour of the singer so much so that the keyboard is just background music...this doesn't help as it comes off a bit fake (for lack of a better word).

Sorry there wasn't more positives :(

Hope that helps in some way.
Phil.

thank you for your advice,
I did notice the voice was slightly out of sync but that was after i had exported it for the 3rd time (it took about 35mins to render -_-) after making other changes, It was 4am and I simply couldn't be bothered and I showed it to my other friend, another videoographer who didn't see that. I know I should have spread out the editing over a few days rather than doing it all at once and next time (we are hoping to do another video after the summer holidays at my mam's friends farm) I plan to take all weekend to finish it.

I used a combination of sony vegas to do the main audio sync and composition, adobe after effects (to do the bit with the multiple shots) and imovie to do the beginning and end titles.

Can I ask what you use to edit?

For the audio, that was recorded seperatly in a studio that Lauren (the singer) and cale (pianist) had rented out, unfortunately I had no part in that :(

thanks for your tips, I shall keep them in mind next time.

I understand it's annoying Chris but I found with video editing the word "perseverance" is really useful to remember ;)

I use premiere pro CS6 and probably render a finished file about 4 times...and i'm never happy even when it looks amazing lol.

There is usually a draft that goes out for your client and your own feedback, then another for second edits and then it should be done after that but to be honest, this process goes on and on until the client is satisfied (and you are).

I never ever render before going to sleep for that "can't be bothered" reason, always wake up, look again and if you're happy to render to so if not then don't.

i have premier pro too, Ill have a go at that next time but tbh I'm more familiar with my way and it will probably be faster than learning, It seems so stupid now that I rushed it... I still have all the files however if I upload it again it won't carry on the views :/

I think it would be worth doing to be honest, the singer doesn't come off very comfortable and with re-edit could look pretty cool.

On another note, I would like to compliment you on the moving shot that opened the video (first shot of the singer. I really liked it and will use it in future!

thankyou! I used my skateboard for that part, it took many re takes to get it right :bonk: I have nothing to do today, I maswell play around with it for a bit, see if I can make it any better, Ill post the link on here if I finish it :wave:

yea but I've been a bit distracted atm (looking for a new lens for low light, i decided on getting the 50mm F1.8 as it would be good for my holiday in two weeks and its such good value for the money), Ive re-synced the audio but I haven't had a chance to mix up the shots. I found some more shots of cale playing the piano from above, I might crop them a bit so you can only see one hand and add that aswell as maybe making a bloopers at the end like you see in films (the scrolling titles with the video playing at the sides but Im yet to find how you would do that) but it might take me a few weeks to get round to it as Im going on holiday for two weeks next week and I go out with my friends a lot :)

Cool.

I just bought a new 50mm afs so have the AF-d if you're interested? There is the tiniest spec of something on the front element which I haven't discovered what it is...its inside the lens so i'm thinking a tiny amount of mould...it doesn't effect IQ at all though (at the moment). Otherwise it is in excellent condition. Its about 1mm x 1mm.

I'll be putting it up in classifieds in the next couple of days and we can see what's going on...
